Anybody having any luck calling in coyotes this year yet? I had luck last year but this year nothing. I've used both electronic calls and hand calls (mouth calls ...whatever you call em) with no luck at all. A few of my buddies hunt yotes as well and haven't been able to call them in either. Am I just having bad luck or is the abnormally warm weather and no snow doing anything to keep them away. I've got a few of them while out walking for deer but none when I call. (The 338 fed with 215gr does nothing for the hide....but don't seem to hurt the 4 paws though). I've tried at all times of the day from daybreak till sunset and nothing. Not that I've been doing it full time but I have done more than 20 stands and no luck where as last year I would say I would get 1 every half dozen stands at least.
I'll keep trying and bring the 223.
Any hints or tips would be appreciated.

Warm weather does nothing for the 'dinner bell' approach, its true. Try some 'pup in distress' or other different calls and see what happens.

I've been out about 5 times this year with the sole purpose of hunting coyotes. Almost all of the 5 times I either saw some coyotes or have taken them. It seems for me that there appears to be more this year then in the past. I have seen doubles, coyotes returning to the same stand hours later (even after I have been busted the first time), and some very aggressive animals. The only time I didn't see anything was when I went out with a new hunter, I probably won't go out with him again. I was only able to go to about 2 stands in the morning (I usually will set up 5-8 times). He spent way too much time trying to find things in his vehicle and was really disorganized and slow; a nice guy but very ineffective as a hunter.

The only advice I can offer is to keep hunting, sometimes you will go through dry spells -- patience will get you fur. As well, if you are hunting/calling a stand sometimes you need to wait longer -- I found that 30mins is the min I will stay at a stand. When I first got into coyote hunting I was only waiting 15 mins and not giving the coyotes time to come in and expose themselves.

I am looking at getting into calling here. The coyote population has exploded in my area and deer are way down. I feel required to help relieve the deer of their burden.

Question: How much practice do I need with a call?

If I just buy a call and attempt to reproduce calls that I have heard will I be successful, Or does it take years to get good?
I would pick up a quiver critter as well.

Try a 'dying rabbit' call? Wiley is an opportunistic feeder.
"...really disorganized and slow..." FNG's are like that. Usually because they don't know what to do or what they actually need to lug around.

yotes are smart and lazy

Well if you had luck last year and shot a few guess how many you educated .Yotes are smart and lazy if there's allot to eat and there isn't allot of competition they are not going to come running for that squealing rabbit so maybe a hurt pup or a challenge call .I'm from SW Ontario we are used to them not coming to the call slipp

I would practice my hand calls while driving in the truck to work. Got pretty decent i guess. Then go out at night on a sideroad and practise howling. I'd get every dog in the county barking and even a few coyotes howling back. Calling coyotes is incrediblily addictive. Wait til you have your first hard charger come in and you can't stop him so you gotta blast him before he runs you over. Great feeling.

i'm going to use my turkey calls this winter for coyotes, called 5 in during spring turkey hunt. Everytime i sat down i'd see a coyote, they ruined a few turkey hunts - pay back time.

Maybe I'm just not waiting long enough. I usually split after 30-40 min. I use the call sequences from varmint al's for my electronic calling and for the mouth calls I have a couple cottontail in distress calls and a jackrabbit in distress call. I had a coyote howler but it sounded really cheesy so I con't use it.
Can anyone recommend a good easy to use coyote howler call that can make all the required calls needed ( challenge, pup in distress....luv sick dog or whatever..).

remember they are territorial, and can hear miles away. give them a chance to come to you. I hear them a few concessions (each on is a mile) south, and then later on they are north, so they travel. for calls, i would use rabbit in distress.

Was out yesterday evening, decided to climb a gravel pile, used a jack rabbit distress call(I have no idea what i am doing) Seen a few circle around down wind about 600-700yards out...and then leave and one mangy one come in to 120yards which I shot. I was going to crack off a few pot shots at the one on a frozen sour lake at about 600yards... but even if I did get em i wasn't going to walk out on the 2" thick ice lol.

Any veteran want to apprentice a newb??? I have a nice leica range finder, and can just tag along with the 12 gage for close in stuff. I also have a .308 that I am confident with out to 300yards on the bipod.... if your not interested in saving the hide.

I would recommend the Primos Lil' Dog. Easy to use for a beginner but versatile to create scenarios. Still one of my favorite howlers.

And no I don't work for Primos..

agreed, primos lil dog was the first howler i used. Worked well, I bought a few custom made ones from the states. They are similar but produce a bit differnet pitch, alternate with them both and make it sound like 2 coyotes howling
