Hi guys,

I need some suggestions regarding calling in coyotes, I do alot of varmint hunting on the weekends where are cabin is.... There are alot of 'yotes there, The terrain is very hilly, and alot of small patches of dense bush and pastures.

I tend to road hunt alot, slowly driving the country roads and looking for 'yote's that are on the prawl. Often when i see one, i'll get out of the truck and try and get a shot off the hood of my pickup.... The thing is, there are alot of locals out there that do the same, and 99% of the time, when i spot a 'yote, or turn a corner and see one, as soon as it hears the engine, or hears me slow down, it'll go into a dead run full blast to get away. They have all been shot at, and know what to do.... they often run to about 800 yards or so then will settle down... (I've acquired a .308, and am getting an M-1000 ART II scope, to go out to those long ranges, but thats another topic)

I'm starting to think about using a different tactic. There are many locations where i can stop, hidden just behind a ridge, and looking over I can see over large pastures with creeks.... I would like to set up in these locations and try and call them in. What would be a good option for that? some kind of electronic call? maybe a wounded rabbit call? or a coyote "yip" call? or a combination?

also, what can i do other than use a quick yell, to try and get them to stop for a second and have a look, when there in their "life preservation full speed run away"? is there a bark call i can use?

I've never used any calls in the past, so i'm new to the idea, bu i know learning how to use them will increase my kill ratio 100%! ;-)

any suggestions are appreciated!

ginnz.

It's tough to call them if they've been jacked with repeatedly.
Many times in a case where the farmer has shot at them frequently, I set up 3-400 yds away from a likely spot and wait . Sometimes I call but very little and usually as a last resort.

In relatively unmolested territory I use a Dan Thompson red dessert howler and or an e caller/decoy set at least 30 yds away from me to one side.

The most important thing is wind followed by stealth. Sit still.

For the price Jhonny stewart digital preymaster is a good electronic call..... I use one all the time and have used the same call for 4 or 5 seasons now, have had good and consistant success with this caller, multiple dogs coming in at once, pairs, coyotes running through the blind from behind etc, a barrel of fun for under 200$ for the wireless model, one with a 50 foot cord to the speaker is around 100$ on e-bay. If you feel a little more spendy Fox pro seems to be the cadillac but at over 3 times the price of the J stewart electronic caller i didnt bite. The Jhonny stewart calls have a wide selection of sound cards, batteries last a long time, and has good volume, pulls them in from a long ways out. Only my opinion i am sure others here will differ. cheers, happy shooting.

You can find lots of calls on youtube or similar media (coyote or crow.....)

Down load them via a youtube downloader, put on an IPOD or CD, plug into your Battery powered CD / IPOD player and leave that out "down range" .......voila. Poor boys caller

I myself am having a terrible time trying to call in the Coyotes. I cannot seem to get anything to come to the calls here in Mid Western Ontario. Im using a johnny Stewart Electronic Call as well as some hand Calls.. If anyone has any advice please send it over cause im outta things to try... Good thing winter is coming cause the Coyotes Cannot hide from the Hounds.

I'm giving yotes a try this year, done a lot of reading and vid watching and fallowing threads on this board, so take my advise as you will; for ginnz, your yotes are road hunter weary, you got to leave the truck behind and walk into the country a bit, find a good spot, mind the wind and good hunting
ackerjosh, you sure there are yotes in your areas? Don't over do it, try one place for 30min and move to next spot, mind the wind and your body movement, where you hunt? Farmland, woods? If you are close by and need a back door gunner give me a shout, and good hunting

I find that as Sky has said wind is the most important. Then in this part of Ontario because of the large wooded areas Volume is another issue. Jackrabbit tends to be the most successfull with a sequence of 2 minutes of Calling and 2 minutes of silents and work with that as you lift your volume level.

My area has not hardly a jackrabbit in it but the sound of the higher pitch screams seems to work and most kills have been on the upper level of Volume. After 25 -30 minutes I will move 200-300 yards and reset and start again.

I don't care what anyone says you will do more sets of nothing over any shooting but thats part of the game just don't give up. This is a great time of the year to do the Kihi as the pups are out learning what they need to know.

To stop a dog I will "wolf" at them like a bark some stop and some just keep going.

Hope that helps

Thanks rhino and Adrian J. Well I know there are a ton of Coyotes in the Area but im wondering if they just dont need to hunt for food do to all the Farmers in the Area and the Minnonights throwing all there dead animals away into the bush. I have noticed that since the Minnonights have moved into the the area(15 years ago ish) most of the animal population has gone up other than the Deer. Not only that when a cow in Calfin we dont have as many issues any more with coyotes running in and trying to steel the calf, witch makes me think that the minnonights dead stock is feeding the coyotes.. There are 3 groups in out area that hunt with dogs.. Our group doesnt travel much over a 10mile square ratious and we will get well over 150coyotes per winter. So i Do believe the Numbers are there. Maybe just a sit and stock with some pup yips near the Dead piles will get there attention. Anyone heard of any success doing that?

hahaha there very old fashoned ppl. They live with no electricy running water etc. Farm for a living the old fashioned way. Some have old gas powered tractors but most of everything they do is done with horse and buggy. Also have about 13 children running around. Only go to school till gr8 and then start to work on the farm. Really olf fashoned way of life. There children done even go to school with the modern society children. If your really interested look them up on google lol.

LOL. Well i have been living side by side with them for over 10 years now. Just cause I cannot spell it does not mean i dont know about them. No im not an expert and would never concider myself one nor would I want to be thought of as one. All I can say is there has been a change in the wildlife numbers in the area since then have moved in. Its not a bad thing just thought that maybe thats why it seems a little harder to call in coyotes in the area.

That being said.. Back to the original post. If calling is not working out could u possibly try what Im going to try and try and get them while feeding around a kill pile. Thats if there are any Hutterite in the area of Manitoba u are hunting.

Waiting over bait can work, but it is boring and unproductive compared to calling for us. You can wait for hours only to have them hit the bait long after dark. We don't wait over bait, but we often call near dead stuff if sign says coyotes are near.

Ok thanks. I think thats my next line of attack. I know of a good area that usuly has lots of coyotes throughout the winter and has a couple dens in it. Ill sit 200yrds from the pile and try some calling and see if that will bring them in.. Maybe i can trick them into thinking there is another coyote around there food.
As for that thanks again and good luck with the hunting and shooting

Here's a link for a ton of free calls, I did a CD and put about 1minute 30 seconds between sounds. I just recently ordered a cheap mp3 player for around $4, a 9volt powered amp for about $15, and a speaker for about $10, off ebay . I have not received my goodies but will soon I hope. here's a website for some good info... ht tp://www.varmintal.com/coy5-20.htm

Here's a link to download the whole list of calls that I got for free... http://www.varmintal.com/allcalls.zip

this time of year being a time of plenty, I think it will be hard to call them in with a game in trouble noise, maybe try Bambi in distress, but I would try to woe them with a stronger on my land kiya calls and such, yotes have a large range area, so while they may be there in winter, they might be somewhere else in summer time

Im out in Alberta and what i do to shoot most of my coyotes is wait untill we loose a calf or a cow (living on a cattle farm slightly raises odds of finding and knowing of dead animals). I go drag the dead animal to a fairly open spot, (usually near the Haybales within 50m) then early in mornings before it gets light i sneak out and climb up on bales, almost every time there are 4+ coyotes chowing down, one time there was one sitting up on the hay!! Regardless, just what i do, a little off topic.. lol

best of luck
