I saw a TV show a while back and the hunter was using a call that produced a yipping sound, like a coyote. Supposedly it was a challenge call... ?
Anyway, it looked pretty damn good! There were several times when multiple coyotes were running to the caller. Then he'd switch the tone of the call to a weak yip to bring them in further.

So what calls and brand names, do guys use that are simple and effective to produce the coyote yelps, yips etc?

I've been out with a guy using a dying rabbit or something like that and I couldn't stand the squealing noisy thing.

I have used rabbit types and howlers of various types, and my suggestion is to suck it up a bit. The howlers will work on occasion as a call, and work fairly often as a locator, but the dying rabbit types are much more effective at getting coyotes to actually come to you.

Talking to coyotes with a howler is much harder and less effective than sounding like free food.

I have never had much luck with a howler, I have on the other hand had exceptionally good luck with cottontail distress.
I have several calls, mostly wood that vary in effective range.
Yesterday I got my spanking new Foxpro Fury in the mail, the store included a hand call called "Skyote", an open reed call. Took a bit to get the hang of but once I figured it out I am happy as can be! I am going to try it tonight, it makes crazy loud sounds and can be used at a very low tone as well. It also came with a keychain call too, a typical squeeler.

I picked up a zinks call. F-ing expensive, but the only hand call locally available to me that was open reed. Might set up a homemade E caller(if I can get the parts) till I get the hang of the hand call.
