Coyote Hunt in Niagara Region - DEMO This Saturday Feb. 4, 2012

Last Saturday (Jan. 28, 2012) a massive coyote hunt took place in West Lincoln Township just south of Hamilton. A handful of observers travelled from Toronto, Niagara Region and London to observe the hunt. We were alerted to the hunt by an area landowner who opposed the coyote hunt and asked for help.

We are going back this Saturday for a DEMO in support of rural residents that feel their voices are stifled by more aggressive hunting interests.

Details and photos below.

Here's what happened last Saturday:

We were monitoring a block of land bordered by two concession roads and two county roads. Two hunters approached us and asked what our business was. We stated that we were hiking in the area. We didn't inform them at this time that we intended to observe the hunt. The hunters stated that since we were in the area, they would move their hunt to either another area or another day.

Then they left.

Some observers decided to drive back since the weather was turning nasty, but some of us stayed. We had never encountered such accommodating hunters and wanted to ensure that the hunt was truly called off.

Within fifteen minutes of the observers leaving, a mob of hunters descended on the area. We met up with the local landowner who originally called us and together we informed the hunters that we were staying to observe the hunt. We explained that we notified both the Niagara Regional Police and the Ministry of Natural Resources that we would be in the area today. As long as we weren't disruptive we should be able to observe since wildlife is public property in the eyes of the law and remained on public roads.

They didn't like this and decided to leave once again. One hunter blocked our car on the road so we couldn't follow them and we lost them. They moved to a block of land next to the landowner who opposed the hunt and she called us. Soon after we arrived, the hunters called the police. The Niagara Regional Police arrived and dispersed everyone - hunters and all.

There is good reason why hunters don't want to be watched. Below are a few photos of what hunting really looks like. It takes a mob of people with rifles and a hungry pack of dogs to bring down a coyote. The myth of hunting being somehow 'traditional', 'intrinsic' 'natural' or 'challenging' would be reduced to one of simple sport. Hunters do not wander too far from the road. The dogs do all the work. Hunters simply wait and shoot.

Please come to West Lincoln this Saturday Feb. 4, 2012 for a road demo in support of local rural residents who oppose these flash mob coyote hunts.

It is likely that these hunters will be back since they didn't finish the job last Saturday.

All I can say is these people are wacked! Kind of makes me want to send an e-mail giving them piece of my mind.

Time: 8:30am



Where: Junction of Wonderland Road North and Sixteen Mile Road – just north of London, Ontario and just south of Highway 7.



Sixteen Mile Road runs east /west between Richmond Street (Hwy. 4) and Wonderland Road. If travelling north on Richmond Street from London, turn west (left) just before reaching Hwy. 7 (Elginfield). If travelling south on Hwy 4 from Lucan, pass through Hwy. 7 junction and turn west (right) on the first road – Sixteen Mile Road.



Please devote at least one hour for the demo

As soon as they do anything that disrupts the hunt... Even assembling a mass because hunters are there just to cause a disruption, they are interfering with a legal hunt... That is a crime...

What's not traditional about that? I didn't realize sitting in a tree stand and hoping a coyote comes by is traditional..

I have an idea, if they're complaining about dogs being used(and I very much doubt they're hungry:rolleyes: lmao), how about they flush them out for the hunters to shoot? They want to observe hunting after all. :p

Yep, and I really hope one of the hunters will go forward with an official complaint.
 
Why don't they go observe the production of wieners and bologna , from START(live piggies) to FINISH(Oscar Meyer).Then they can see what production of food and meat manufacturing "really looks like";)
 
It is stories like this that make me thankful to live in Sask. For the most part people understand hunting and either participate in it or let others do so in peace.

13. (1) A person shall not interfere with lawful hunting, trapping or fishing by,

(a) tampering with traps, nets, bait, firearms or any other thing used for hunting, trapping or fishing;

(b) placing himself or herself in a position, for the purpose of interfering, that hinders or prevents hunting, trapping or fishing; or

(c) engaging in an activity, for the purpose of interfering, that disturbs or is likely to disturb wildlife or fish.

Why are these people not being charged?

I wish I was close enogh to join in this hunt ... first person that even attempted to stop me, or interfere with my Legal Hunt would be having a meeting with the MNR, and I would not rest until they were charged and removed from the area.

Good question.

They can say whatever they want, and have their stance on the issue.. in a LEGAL manner.

They're also doing more then that. They were also harassing and stalking them.

I agree. I have nothign against them if they want to stand on the road near the hunter's vehicles and protest in a peacefull manner - that's how things are done in our country, and everyone is entitled to their own opinion. But following the hunters during a hunt, or any of the other thigns they were doing are Illegal.

According to how the Act is written, just their intent of showing up and disrupting the hunt is Illegal and carries the same penalties. Some of these hunters need to have the MNR's number on speed dial and call them if these lawless peopel show up again.
 
The MNR caters to the lefties in Ontario why do you think we lost our spring bear hunt? And now the population increase was massive. I hope the blacks grow huge and eat all of the antis for breakfast because the lefties think they are entitled to our rural areas more than the people that live there.
 
Hopefully none of these well intentioned people are ever involved in any hunting accidents. No fur coats during your protests.
 
I checked out their website for kicks and giggles.

There was an article that caught my interest regarding deer numbers in Eastern Ontario. I have to admit that what they claim has happened matches what every hunter in that region believes in. Namely, that over-hunting via the generous issuance of nuisance and other tags by the MNR has decimated the eastern deer numbers.

Where do you get that?... It's almost impossible nowadays to get a nuisance tag.... even for a farmer...

If anything has "decimated" the deer numbers it's coyote pressure and the fact that it has been ten degrees during hunting season for the last 3 years and the deer aren't moving as much.... the rut is happening post season now and hunters are seeing fewer deer.

That all being said, I don't personally see the decline in numbers but that is just me... I commute along two highways along fields everyday and I am seeing as much as ever... I have feeders and cams on my property that I run year round and often get 15-20 deer behind my house in the winter where I feed them....

The damage was done years ago, not recently. Prior to 2005 almost anyone who asked received up to 6 nuisance tags, at least for our area in Merrickville.

I'm glad you're still having luck with deer but in WMU 66A our sightings have steadily crashed between 2006-2010. Only this year did we see the deer numbers ever so slowly go up compared to last year.
