Coyote dilemma

I'm going to try for coyotes - bought a predator call. Hopefully it brings them in

I'm going to use a 44 mag carbine (cheap to reload)

I'm excited - my first year hunting

Calling is the only answer, way more opportunities on your timeline. .44 magnum ain't the gun for it.

A friend and I shot hundreds of coyotes back in the late 60's early 70's in the fall and winter and spring... We used light caliber hunting rifles except when the snow got deeper.. a .270 and .280 gave a bigger 'splash' when you shot so you could compensate better on the next shot... some were shot as close as 100 yards, most over 300.

Early, early morning until about 11 am was the best time for us and snow on the ground ... This was barely outside of Calgary at the time.
 
A good call will only net you so many coyotes, understanding the pattern of a coyote will yield you the most success. Eastern coyotes are different then Western coyotes. Coyotes have very predictable morning, day and evening pattern. Those pattern will change through out the seasons as well. Only boots on the ground will give you good intel. One golden tip for a lot of coyotes on the ground is hunt near cattle. Learning good calling sequences and a good rifle/scope combo will help but nothing is better then understanding where a coyote will be.
