I heard a commotion this morning with the sound of the three cats scrambling onto the roof of the house from the deck. I took a look out the side window to see a small coyote trotting and hunting around the side of the house. Now my general rule of thumb is that I won't shoot the local yotes unless they cause problems (no sense creating room for ones that might be problematic). Coming to within 20 yards of the house and trying to eat the cats is considered a problem. I had time to unlock the .22-250 and slip a single round into the chamber before slipping out the sliding doors and onto the deck. The coyote didn't see or hear me and I waited until it got clear of the out buildings and equipment before drilling it through the shoulder.
It was a little female - dry teats - so no pups. Must have been last years pup driven to come close to the house due to being ejected from the pack to make room for this years pups. Glad I don't have neighbors to see me dressed in nothing but my gotch and shooting a rifle from the deck.
