That's what I figured. That barrel looks very much stock.

My mistake,

It's a 1 in 9" twist. I have not tried the 80gr VLD's

I figured so. I wouldn't try the 80's then. Too heavy for your twist. The most I would go, in that barrel, is the Hornady 75 grain match bthp or Berger 70 grains.
Either, have fun with the rifle.

Balance is awesome, less barrel heavy, more neutral in your hands. I use a blind often for yotes and the 24-26" can be a pain in the a**. That's why I got the LTR to build off,

With that hacksaw hanging on the wall you could make it even handier.

I love my stock .223 LTR. So much so, that I've built several other projects using the HS Precision LTR stock and 20" (and less) barrel lengths. I'd really like to try a McMillan A1 some day. I wouldn't suspect there's a great deal of difference to be had between the McMillan & HS stocks.

I thought the same as you until I bought a McMillan.

LOL, thats what that huge lard a$$ gunsmith from American Guns would use to "professionally" shorten a BBL... ;-) (sorry, just had to throw that in) LOL.

I've owned (3) A5's and never liked them enough to keep them. I'm hoping the A1 will be a better fit.

I hear you, I felt the A5's were more bench/prone type stocks and didn't lend themselves as well to hunting/carrying. I have two McMillan's now, a Sako Hunter pattern for a Tikka 595 and this M40 and I am extremely happy with them, they fit/feel great.

With the M40, I wanted a stock that I could comfortably shoot offhand as well as the bench, something that was much closer to a standard hunting stock. The fit and finish are top notch as well,
