Looking for recommendations on best gun options for Coyote hunting. Have an opportunity to hunt from local farmers to hunt them, its in WMU 87 so there is restrictions. Affordable is key, as I have many for big game.
Thanks,
BH

Er... Are we supposed to guess which province? I'll have a go... Alberta?
I'll suggest Onterrible ....
Ford, Chevy , Dodge, Toyota , Nissan.
What one is the better p/u truck for Coyote hunting?
And B, before you get offended the topic is discussed by-weekly after the ides of March.
Not saying you can not post threads about Coyote rifles , but maybe add something to your quest .

What are the restrictions?

Assuming a whole bunch of $hit, due to the vagueness of your original post, I'm going to say .223 or .243. 4n2t0 for the win!!!

Ok... a little digging - there are lots of sub-categories of a wmu87 in the Kitchener-Waterloo-Cambridge area of South Western Ontario - is that where you are? Yes, there are calibre restrictions - I think you have to keep them below .270, but don't take that as fact. I haven't lived in ON (Cambridge, actually) since 2018.

Best is very subjective, 100 guys will give you 100 different answers, there is a bunch of threads on coyote rifles on here, hit the search engine and start reading,

There isn’t a one size fits all answer to that question. Different solutions to different situations. Sometimes I switch it up just because I feel like it. Since you mentioned a budget, I would suggest maybe a Ruger American of some sort in a cartridge that complies with the restrictions in your area. Keep it simple and do a 223 if that is legal, that way you can benefit from cheap ammo to.

Ford would be my choice, the back seat has lots of room for gear/extra passengers and keyless entry so I never have to worry about what pocket I put them in.

Best gun but cheap… that never really work out!
I just bought a cz600 Lux in 223 and that will be the best coyote/wolf gun for me, it was cheaper than some but more expensive than others. I’ll mount a Leupold 3.5-10x40 cause that is what I have now!
As for ammo… I don’t know I will probably buy some factory ammo to try out but I will definitely reload for it since I do that for all my other chambering.
So what is the best gun for you, just you will know!
Oh and I drive an 06 dodge ram 2500 crew cab long box 4x4 with an inline 6 Cummings diesel engine!
I like it!

If that's an Ontario WMU and it sounds like it-caliber restriction is likely .275 making .270 the biggest you can legally use.

Guessing though...so don't go by me.

As for what might be "best"-most of the hunting I've done is on farms within about an hour of that WMU, and there aren't many I've been on where a .223 wouldn't be a good option. Farms don't tend to be huge but there a few exceptions. For the added punch/usefulness o bigger game (=deer) .243 might be the next/best/most common? You don't need 243 or 270 to knock over a coyote, a lot of Ontario guys like 22-250.

If affordability is key why not just use one of your big game rifles loaded with light bullets. Without knowing the caliber restrictions can't offer much more than that.

My favorite is a 22-250 but as others have stated, just about anything 204 and up works. Personal preference.
Good luck choosing

A good bargain rig I got for myself was a Remington 783 .223 Heavy Barrel with an MDT Oryx chassis and Arken EPL-4 6-24x50.
Lapping the bore with J-B paste on VFG felt pellets really tightened the groups nice.
Pool noodle stock went in the blue bin, and a friend put the original scope on a Savage 64 that needed glass.

Over the years it was .222, then a custom .22-250 (too heavy to lug around) then 6.5 x 55 in a sporterized M38, went to .223 Ruger Mini 14 (least accurate rifle I ever owned); then .223 in a Remington 78, best shooting, worst feeding .223, then an H & R Handy rifle in .223 All-round inaccurate, poorly balanced and worst trigger ever. Got a Zastava 65. x 55 bought new. It is the one, it reminded me that I should have stuck with the Swede back in the 70's.
