Cummins: How do you like the single shot Cooper? I have been tempted to pick a Cooper up but I don't like the idea of hunting with a single shot rifle esp if a double or triple comes in. Does your Cooper get lots of hunting time?

Rem Model 788 in 6mm. 62gr varmint grenades. Elite 4200 3x9x40. Need better glass and a custom stock (hard to find) but it's shot more coyotes than I can count.

Well it's been a good couple of weeks. I got a new Ruger 17HMR, Sig Mosquito #2, and now a challenger to my current coyote rig. I just received my lightly used Anschutz 1730 - 22 Hornet. I lapped some Burris rings and mounted a cheapie Elite 4200 2.5-10x40mm, bore-sighted her, and called her good. I haven't owned a 22 Hornet since my last ill-fated Ruger 77/22 so I am pretty excited to see how this hornet will group. I loaded a bunch of test load Sierra 40 Grain Soft point Hornet, 45 gr Sierra SP Ht, and 40 gr Sierra HP. I also have a bunch of 40 gr VMAX to try if the first three don't group as well as I would like. One odd thing is that she doesn't have swivel studs... I don't know if I could bear to drill the wood to mount a sling. Here is the challenger:

Against the current champ - CZ 527 American M1 .223 Rem w/ Swarovski Habict 4-12x50mm.

I am tempted to try a .338 LM but she is pretty darn heavy and not made for the quick up close shots that I usually get:

She is the one in the back with S&B PM II 5-25x56 scope. So what about you guys anything new for coyote termination?

Hey, that middle one looks familiar. I'm just getting the finishing touches done on a rem 700 stainless that I turned into and ADL. Had to go back to the smith; there was a burr in the chamber!!!??? In the meantime I've just been using my 30-06 (it's hunting season anyways). With the 30-06, those targets of opportunity go down hard.

If I may comment on this: I have a Cooper Phoenix in 6.5-284 which is hands down one of the most accurate rifles I have ever owned. While breaking the barrel in and cleaning every 5 shots from 60 to 100 rounds into the process, it started printing 0.4" 5 shot groups and worked its way down to 0.293" 5 shot groups using Sierra 142 Match Kings. My buddy bought one in 22-250 and it is as accurate. I cannot say enough about them

Now to the question at hand: Coyote Rifles.

In the 1970's while I was a teenager growing up on a cattle ranch is western Alberta, coyotes were going for over $100. This was when minimum wage was around $2 an hour! I made all my spending money and paid for over half of my university with coyote money.

Around 1976 or 77 I bought a Remington 788 in 22-250 and put a Weaver fixed 10X scope on it. I was loading Sierra hollow points (52 grain I think?).

It was a death ray on coyotes, it grouped beautifully, and to impress my buddies, I would occasionally disintegrate a pigeon of the barn roof. I got stupid in university and traded the 788 on Black Powder gun for competition.

Reading the gun magazines, I found out this was not a good rifle so I bought a heavy barrel Ruger 77 in 6mm Rem. This was the most disappointing rifle I ever purchased. A Rem 700 H.B. in 6mm bought later was much better but I missed the 788.

Today the VSSF in 220 swift with 50 grain V-Max is my coyote choice. I have 2 each 204's that have never been shot at coyotes but I bet they would work nicely.

Someday I will replace that 788 with another one.....I think I am over to EE to put a WTB!

When I'm calling and expecting shots inside a couple hundred yards, and especially if calling where I'm hoping to have a chance at a fox, I'll usually use a Sako Vixen in .222 Rem shooting 40 grain Ballistic Tips. Lots of dead dogs, and (knock on wood) have never lost one to that rifle and load.

When it's time for serious coyote work and longer shots, I'll switch to a Tikka 595 in .22-250 shooting a 50 grain Ballistic Tip. A more practical set-up when shooting at a yote caught unawares out yonder in the middle of a field.

It's a nice rig...:)

I have seen many coyotes shot with less,... whatever suits the shooter, I'm just happy to know there are people getiing out and at it and enjoying themselves, a pump 243 or a 221 fireball Cooper, it's all good.

My rig is still being put together adn won't be in hand for about another 3 weeks,..hopefully just in time to get in some xmas hunts..

This here was last years rig..

New TC Pro-Hunter in .223 with Bushnell 4200 4-16x40 and am waiting for my Bergara barrel in .243 that will wear a 4200 4-16x50. The .223 is a total tack driver that is grouping 5 AE 50gr HP's into 1/2" and getting better as it is shot in. I did a trigger job on it using Bellm parts, what an improvement!! I also installed a Tony Gettel aluminum pillar bedded forend and have another on the way for the .243 barrel.

Ruger M77 Target in 220 swift with sierra 52gr. HPBT match, Bushnell legend 5-15x40 with mil dot. No fur damage on a frontal shot, and bang flop everytime out to 300 yds. Aim for right on the shoulder. Awesome rifle.

2nd weapon is a cheap build up I did, stevens 223, timney trigger at 2 lbs, cabelas 6-18x40 with bullet drop turret. 60 vmax, win case, 205M primer, 26.4gr. varget. 3150 fps, 1/2" 5 shot groups at 100. Bang flop as well as long as you hit the shoulder, can get a bit messy through the ribs. Longest shot was 446 yds. on a fox, lasered. Cranked turret to 400yds, held on the top of the back, and hit 2" down. Thought he was at 5-600 at the time. Suprised myself!!

I'm also using a Ruger M77 Mk II Target but in 22-250. Heavy bugger but very accurate. Topped with a Nikon Monarch 4-16 X 42 mildot. 3/4" groups at 100yds off a bipod using factory Hornady 50g v-max. My friend is making up some handloads that I'll try this year.

Have had some trouble with frontal shots if I don't hit inside the shoulder. Catch the shoulder blade front on and it looks like you shot it with the 270! On broadside shots, hold right on the shoulder = good results.

Dreaming about a CZ 527 Varmint in .204 mmmmmm........:)
