it will be my first time out hunting coyote (not the first time i shot one) and i was wondering if their was anyone in my area who hunts coyotes and wouldent mind if a newbie tags along?

thanks

Firsttimer,

I hunt in NB all the time. I'm in the Fredericton area, but have hunted on family owned land in the Edmunston area. Unfortunately I prefer not to hunt way up north anymore as the poachers and trespassers make it almost unbareable. Woodstock area is the furthest I go when I can help it. I prefer south of Fredericton closer to Fredericton Junction when possible or on base.

Wee morning hours or late evening are the only times I've seen coyotes in the summer. In the fall I can walk and stalk watering holes and wood trails. My most success if on natural baits such as fallen big game, others are farmer or trapper dump areas.

I have a solid grip on homemade callers and setting up stand strategies for my area. I have taken a number of friends out from the FRSA gun club. The preferred caliber is .223 (matches varmint limit here in NB), as it has the punch and range required to drop wild dogs most efficiently.

If you'd like to go sometime let me know, I'll let you know what my schedule is. What area are you from?

Regards,

Jake

im from bathurst and up here its hard to get a good place to hunt coyotes because when you find a good area whare no one goes it always seems that once theirs one set of tracks into an area people just have to go and see what people are up to, their is a few coyotes but most i have seen around people homes. well if im ever going down by your way i'll give you a shout.

thanks

Question...

Can someone actually tell me the reason as to why you cannot hunti varmits with a .243 but you can with a 22-250??? Why do they have the caliber restrictions???

That is one thing i could never figure out while i lived there.:confused:

Don't ask questions.

Didn't you know? We're the subjects and must do what we are told. There is no reason, the very fact that they have made it the law is good enough.

Matthew

PS - to the OP, I live in the Edmundston area and am willing to go hunting with you (or anyone else in the area) just about anytime.

get yourself some calls. I use Sceery calls exclusively buy any of them will work. I started calling coyotes around Miramichi area in mid-90's. Calling is difficult with a pretty low success rate but I had some success at it. For me, I have always found that the coyotes and foxes always try and get downwind, particularly in this part of the world where the cover is thick. There are a lot of good websites that explain coyote calling/strategies, etc in a lot of detail. You will find that you learn a little bit each time you go out and after you actually call something in and see it/shoot it/shoot at it, you will get more confidence. The keys to success are: there has to be coyotes around, you need to get into the area without being detected, and you need to be setup so that you can see them. If it is not possible to hunt in the "downwind direction" I had some luck using red fox urine as cover scents. Finally, don't rush it. let the area settle for 5-10 minutes when you arrive and stay for at least 30 minutes. Only a small number of coyotes came charging right in (foxes more often charge right in), they rest took a good 10-25 minutes before committing. Have fun with it and don't get too worried if you don't have success right away. You will eventually get it right and have some action! I have also called bobcats, hawks, ravens/crows, and bears (spring/fall).

I found over the years that red foxes are much more aggressive. I think that I have called in probably 3 or 4 times the number of foxes than coyotes.

I live in southern NB now and hope to get out calling again sometime soon. Good luck to you.

i would love to get some coyote hunting in this fall/winter. still need to knock out the hunter safety course in September though...

i wish you could just make an appointment for anytime for the testing, same with the CFSC. i missed the session they had on the 6th due to a scheduling error, what a pain :(
