Coyote Hunters: What optics best?

I started out with a 3-9 leupold and found it did not have enough magnification for me to effectively hunt fur at ranges past 200 yards. I swapped it out to a 4-12 leupold and found it just about right.

3X9 is really all one needs to spank yotes but higher powered optics are great for those few odd wise or stubborn dogs that hang just out of range... or so they think!

I use an Elite 3200 5-15X50. 90% of of my shooting is with the scope set at 5-8 but I really like having the extra magnification for sighting in or popping crows.
I have realized that although I can shoot pretty good from a bench (1/2" today at the range with my t3 22-250) my field shooting is not so hot, I have missed yotes at 100 yds!, Most of my shots are under 125yds, hoping to improve this season.

I just installed a 4200 4-16 on my .204, only been to the range as of yet and so far its great but hope to see some coyotes this weekend!

I prefer Leupold scopes with 1" tubes in 4 - 12X or 4.5 - 14X and the 40mm objective len, I always leave the scope set on the lowest setting when sitting in a set up.

Always time to crank up the power if I need too but no time to crank it down if the shot is close.

Also the Boone & Crockett reticle or some kind of mil dot is nice.

sighted in today, here's a couple groups

usually I get groups like this at 200, not 300! and with a silly little 9x scope! :)

My buddy does those kinds of 300 yard groups with iron sights so if I follow your thinking why even use a silly little scope? ;)

For a 'reach out and touch something' scope, I am partial to a 3-12 or a 4-16 Nikon Monarch w/a mil-dot reticle.

X 2!

I put a 4-16 Nikon Monarch w/a mil-dot reticle on my Ruger M77 MkII in .22-250 and really like it. Great clarity and light gathering.

With a good rest and proper rangefinding shots out to 500 yds should be feasible.

I have a Elite 4200 4X16-50mm on my Sako 75V chambered in .204Ruger. I like the versatility of the variable scope. Good for popping pocket gophers at a far stretch, or smacking that coyote that tries to sneak in on your downwind side.

When I am exclusively hunting 'yotes, my 220 Swift wears a 3.5-10 Leuopld with the CPC Reticule. [very fine at the intersection] If other, smaller targets may be on the menu [crows] then I prefer the 6.5-20 EFR with the fine duplex. Regards, Eagleye.

- A Leupold VX-III 6.5-20 Long Range with Varmint Hunter's Reticle on my Savage 112BVSS in 25-06.
- A 10X J. Unertl on my Winchester High Wall in 219 Donaldson Wasp, for the more vintage moments.:)
