Coyote Hunters

I've been hunting coyotes for a few years now, to call six coyotes a trip is considered a good trip for me. Some fellas came into my area and called 19. It was colder than usual at that time. My question to you is this. Will coyotes come to calls that much better in a cold snap or do you think they know something I don't?
 
the colder it is the better.

colder = more calories burned = Coypte can;t aford to pass up that free wounded rabbit....
(or so the theory goes...)
 
There’s cold weather coming later this week I’ll have to see if it makes a difference for me. I try to avoid the cold because; well …it’s just cold.
 
Where in Alberta are ya talking about? I just heard on the local radio (Wain FM) that its getting warmer this week?
But to answer your question,I was out on both a warm day (Boxing day +1) and a cooler day(last Thurs -27 with windchill).I can't say I noticed any real difference, a free meal is just as enticing whether its warm or cold I guess:) .

Guys, you need to howl more these days. They are pairing and territorial. I had a slow day over the Christmas holidays and switched tactics. Howler only howls and and pup in distress. 16 stands straight with called coyotes before we had a dry one.:D

Sometimes stand selection is more important than the call sounds. Many callers have coyotes come in and never get to see them.
 
Does howling work in the middle of the day or just early morning? I don't hear much howling later on in the day.

Not hearing a response doesnt mean they won't come in. They will come in silent a lot of the times.

When I have some back and forth vocalizations and all of a sudden I have nothing, I get ready. This often means they are coming for a look.

I make it a point to howl at noon any day I'm out. Just because the "experts" say it doesn't work.:D I kill lots of coyotes by howling at high noon.

The first rule of calling coyotes......is......there ain't no rules.:D
 
howl

I howl in the morning, squeal in the afternoon, howl late in the afternoon,and check the snares at night. Big dogs in the High Level area.
 
We were out saturday morning in +4, nothing other than crows, and a monster buck came in.
Its the end of January, and this monster 12 (way outside of his ears) came trotting into my distress calls. He stopped about 70 yards away to check us out.
I couldnt believe he still had antlers...
The last three times I've gone out its been warm, or unseasonably warm, and havent had a sniff.
 
I got my first shot early this morning. When I say my first shot I mean my first at actually hunting coyotes. The only other shot at one that I have taken was when groundhog hunting a couple years ago. I have to confess that I am now hooked. What a rush! And I even missed but still was a rush to see 2 of them high tailing it across the field. After my sight came back from the muzzle flash they were long gone. Can't wait till next weekend. What do you fellows use to howl, I need some calling tips.
 
This Tuesday I had one come in within 5 minutes of calling.

The shot was at about 25 yards (through the bush).
