Coyote hunting advice needed! Using an electronic caller...

HI Jay;
Glad to see that your are going to hunt coyotes.
We have a few here in Timmins, but mostly wolves.
I have called wolves but they are hard to call.
I don't have a snowmobile anymore so I'm restricrted to bush roads, and cuts
Good luck Colomkbe, [Lou Roy]
I use a 223 Weaterby Vanguard, and a 243 in a Savage with accutrigger.
I made some cardboard cutouts of plywood and carboard, of wolves, coyotes and fox.
Very good for practice if you don't fget any action.
Thanks again Lou

Not the same call but I find with the spitfire, I have to hang it a couple feet off the ground in a bush or the remote won't work for more than 50 feet. Also helps the sound carry farther. I have a lanyard around the remote and keep it around my neck, It likes to be warm and I agree the buttons on FoxPro suck, basically impossible to operate with gloves.

The main unit likes the lithium batteries, they are lighter than alkaline too so that's a bonus.

The biggest problem here is lack of farms, big clearings, they know they don't have to go out into the open to observe what's going on and they don't.

Only twice have I ever had one come running down the road like in predator quest! Bagged one, shaved the ears of the other! I do call birds of prey in very regularly, nice to see them if no coyotes.

Have you ever tried using a mouth call? It won't fail you, and it is really satisfying calling back and forth with the 'yotes. Even better when you have them barreling down at you!

Hmmm, I'll be disappointed if -15 C is the problem, heck that's most of the darn winter!

Cheers
Jay

Slap a hand warmer on it.

On that note, I bought one of those Hellfires on sale too. I still haven't received it though. Canada Post is ridiculously slow; and I don't know why Cabela's ships it from Regina when we have a store with some in stock right here. I could have gone and picked it up instead of ordering it online two weeks ago, but I haven't had time to head that way.

Anyway, that's for the quick review. I look forward to trying mine out. Superbrad, we'll have to go test it over at your property.

Okay, I finally got to MacGyver a solution to the sensitive electronics & performance in cold weather...

I present the DOLLAR STORE THERMO LUNCH BAG SOLUTION!!! $2 plus an elastic & a couple hand warmers! Fits like a glove, chuckle!

Now I am going to take a hot nail & poke a hole in the thermo bag so the antenna can stick out, might epoxy it if needed... (Just the hole, not the antenna in the hole, chuckle!)

I also bought a camo bag to put my coyote stuff in, so it's all in one place.

Thoughts?

Cheers
Jay

That's the way I should have gone, right up there!

I grabbed the Knight n Hale ez howler, at Cabelas on the way to the farm yesterday

EZ, that call is not! There must be a trick to it. Best sound I can make is a lonely constipated duck.

Coyote hunting is addictive as hell though. 2 times out, no dogs yet but lots of tracks.

Do those howl calls really work, or am I better off sticking to a rabbit in distress?

90% of the time, rabbit in distress is the way to go. Yes howl calls do help/work but if I could only use one call it would be some sort of really loud. high pitched rabbit in distress sound.
