Was wondering if any of you were actually hunting coyotes this winter regardless of the province you live in?

If so, tell us about the firearms and gear you use and any Thing else you would care sharing about dog hunting in yer neck of the woods.

Sako Vixen .222 heavy barrel with 50 gr Hornady SPSX bullets, Burris Fullfield 4X12 scope with fine duplex reticle.

Rem. 700 SPS .22-250 sporter barrel with 55 gr Nosler Ballistic Tips, Leupold VX-1 4X12 scope.

Before we were allowed to use our "deer loads", here in NS, I used 100 grain ammo in my .270. If you can get a butcher's "off alls", especially blood, with snow and cold.....good stuff:) If I could get out now, I'd use my 12 gauge, with heavy lead goose loads or buckshot...in a blind, with bait, and subtle calling.....I just wish I could get out:)

Calls I use are ones I have made myself or those I swaped for to other call makers. I don't have an E call but two of the guys I hunt with do. One calls in the odd coyote the other educates them with too much volume. He's my little brother so I try not to scold him lol.
Rifles: 243' s (two) both with 65 VMax
.22/284 with 55 VMax
.223 with 52 AMax
.222 with 50 Horn SPSX (presently sighted for 50 Win factory as I need some new once fired brass and I'd have to order the stuff and pay through the hoop for it other wise) Besides the gun likes it.
.12 g and #4 buck when calling but most of the coyotes I've killed with a shot gun have been with #6 over turkey decoys lol.
Off the rifles above only the .222 has fired a factory round in the time I've owned them. Good luck fining a factory round in .22/284 lol
Have fun!

Thanks for the warning Adrian, appreciated, I'll check with the CO when I get a chance.

I should have been more clear, with a homemade call that I built to attract coyotes! Guess that makes it a coyote call, I will write coyote slayer on the box.

I'm not sure what Adrian is referring to.... it's not illegal to use a turkey call on yotes to the best of my knowledge....

I am calling with my foxpro, and shooting them with a Remington 700 in 17 remington, a Sako Vixen 222, and a remington 700 in 204 rugger. Just depends on the day

If your from Ontario, That's good for a charge ! just to let you know....

Calibre restrictions in the province occur, other than the minimum standards of shotgun gauge for deer and moose with slugs, in southern ontario only and the last time I looked at the regs the "restricted" areas allowed centrefire calibres up to .275.
I am going to check the regs again but if they are as I last saw .25-06 falls below .275 in diameter.

That is the same as they are now.... small game needs to be less than .275.... curious as to what Adrian feels the charge would be.... hunting turkey out of season and with centerfire?

Brad , I'm not being smart or attacking, but the way I took the post was I hunt coyotes with my turkey call. There for Prove your not hunting turkeys ? There are way to many coyote calls out there and for all the coyotes I have called with any turkey call the percentage is low over a distress call.

Just watching out for the guy that's all in case he never knew " I have no idea" but hey ! Do as you want !

OK cool.... no worries Adrian.... that being said, when you are armed and put a gobbler to bed with an owl call are you hunting owls?.... devils advocate here.... turkey distress can be a pretty good yote call if used effectively..... so can fawn distress.... not my choice of technique but it works....

Hard to prove u r hunting turkeys in January when out with a rifle. I even use a goose call and a hawk call. I've had good success bringing in coyotes with a turkey call when snow is deep

I have called and shot a few coyotes using a turkey decoy and box call. I have asked TWO game wardens about this, You probably know one of them Adrian (Rick Williams)

Nowhere does it say it is illegal either.

My biggest dog I got using a boxcall and turkey decoy. He was 56lbs

Probably would have avoided a lot of questions about what you were talking about if you had put that part in the first post.
That said, I do see your point, since there are a lot of other strange rules about what you can and cannot have while hunting one type of game. In this case, unless you had a shotgun loaded with a turkey type of load, most CO's would probably (hopefully) not be too suspicious.
Cheers!
