Hello, this is my first post. I apologize if it is in the wrong spot. We are looking to replace two good dogs lost through the ice last year. If you know of any in SW Ontario let me know.
Tks

The bigger "hound" breeds....Walkers....Blue tick.

They can get in some pretty good fights with coyotes...so they better be able to handle their own.

Greyhounds have a natural hatred for wild dogs. I used to own a pair of greyhounds that I got from a guy who uses and breeds them for coyote hunting. The larger male (110lbs) would run down the coyote and run him over from behind, while the female would bring up the rear and grab the coyote's throat after the male had rolled it over.

Friend once had a smallish, housepet spayed female greyhound and she had great fun playing with coyotes. They could watch her go out in a field where there would be a coyote. They took turns chasing each other!
The dog would chase the coyote, but never catch it. Then she would run and the coyote would chase her. The dog would prove once in a while that she could easily out run the coyote, but she never caught it! This play thing could last nearly an hour, before one of the animals got tired of the game and called it quits.
That was fun to watch, too, but of course, no pictures.

A fellow I used to know (haven't seen him in years) had 3 Irish wolf hounds, tall and fast and upward of 150lbs. He would be walking in the woods or a field and they would stop, turn and run into the woods and he could hear them killing a coyote...Downside is, they only live to be 6 or 7...

Most guys around here use Walkers or Blue Tick hounds...

Those are coursing dogs, starting and tracking on sight. They are made for the wide open, but they can sure move. Not much use here in the east,

Strictly a scent and pursue game here.

We have a few walkers, a bluetick/plott and one redbone. I like the redbone the most. He may not be the fastest dog, but he's got the best nose of the bunch. The other dogs will be out running everywhere tonguin' like crazy, that lil redbone will take his time, not make a sound. but when he starts tonguin' you better be ready, he's lifted a yote and isn't far behind!!!!

That could be a world record greyhound.

There was a couple that size in Resident Evil.

Edit: theres no scent use in a greyhound, they are a sight hound. A coursing greyhound would have no probs picking up a coyote. But they have no stamina. Cross it with a bull terrier or a farm collie or even the afore mentioned deehound and it would be a great finishing dog. But I think there would be legalities involved here in many provinces.

A couple breeds to consider would be samoyeds or Anatolian shepards. both breeds were conditioned to guard sheep and cattle and any dogs i have seen in these breeds seem to have a natural hatred of coyotes.

Most guys use greyhounds for chase dogs and various other breeds for kill dogs. Running/hunting coyotes with dogs is still legal in SK but there's not many guys doing it anymore, the economics just don't support it.

The only problem with the Rodesian Ridgebacks for Coyote hounds is you never get a shot from what i have learned in reading up on them cause they run them down and kill them and them your searching for a ripped up hide.

No such thing as a strong drink just weak people
