What is the effective range of a coyote's hearing? Is calling in one stand for a bush the length of one concession enough, or might there be one on the other side that didnt quite hear it?

If there isnt a lot of ambient noise, they can hear for a couple kms...Now is that coyote hungry enough to travel a couple k's for the meal...thats the question. I would use several stands to be sure your calls are being heard. We are currently using a 100 acre hobby farm, with 4 stand locations. Depending on wind direction, only 2 or 3 are useable in any given situation.

I have personally seen 2 come in on a dead run for well over a mile and a half as soon as the calling started. Neither one made it. Of course it depends on wind speed/direction and obstructions in the road. I would think they could hear a loud call to about 4-6 kms in the wide open. This is just an educated guess though.
savagelh is right on for open country in sask. I have seen coyotes coming on the run from at least a mile and half also. Sure gives me lots of time to set for the shot. I have done a call setup for a half hour and had a coyote come at the 30 min. mark. It was windy as hell so I think he was just cruising when he heard the call. Just got a double four hours a go. Had five on the hook but couldn't convince them all to hang around after the shooting started.

My experience tells me they can hear a mouse fart at 100 meters.
Last year my buddy was calling 100 yards away from where I was sitting in a small draw. I could see him, but due to weather conditions(it was a calm day, -10 degrees, but low pressure system I think, and fresh snow.) I never once heard his call. But I watched a coyote come charging in from the other side of the valley close to a mile away.
That experience has given me a lot more confidence in the reach of my calls!

Since you're from SW Ontario and it's not very flat around here I'm going to say half a consession will be your effective distance. I rarely get one to come in from beond that most areas have road noise, rolling hills or wind that really cuts the calls distance.

From a directional standpoint they have 1 degree hearing as well. Acording to Rick Jamesons book on coyote calling if I remember correctly that meant that at one mile they could tell within 33 feet of where the noise came from as well. As for how far I have seen them in the bino's well out to the mile and a half mark, Blew on the call and they would turn and look right in my direction, then just go back to mouseing. The trick is you could be calling and there could be half a dozen in the area that just aren't interested, female in heat in the area, just not hungry,
