Good post and great info, have lots of them running around my property and are getting to close to the house, time to set up and try some of the tips mentioned here.HAPPY NEW YEAR

Hey guys I got a question

Is it mating time for coyotes right now? And in mating season do they not respond to calls ass much because of other intrests ?

Because I find all of a sudden they they are not interested in my calls.

I was out calling (rabbit distress) the last two times and they just look up towards me and go about their own business with no care in the world
.

Sounds like they winded you... If they had of saw you move too, they would've ran.

I don't want to sound like a smart a$$ but If you see them why don't you just shoot them? And for your first question no it's not mating season that's not until feb- march and we don't usually notice a difference in reaction at that time of year. We will do a bit more coyote vocals then but that's it. Good luck with the yotes

rral22 you said it best!
I personally call with an E-caller, but each to there own. I always break my sillouet with grass, hillside or tree's. I always call into the wind and sit on a stand for a min of 15 min. Cottontail in distress is probably the most common, but FoxPro has "Baby Crying" DYNAMITE!!

Boomer - I didnt think he could of got a wiff of us. As it was kind of a cross breeze, but you never know. thx

Matt - The first yote was a good 500 out and I wasnt comfortable on taking that shot and plus I didnt want to shoot and spook them for next time. The second yote was coming down a fence line just behind some bushes and he never came out so I didnt get a chance to put the crosshairs on him. Also good to know that they dont drop off the face of the planet when mating. thx

What are the best sort of shooting sticks?

I usually make mine but I've enjoyed the promos trigger sticks or a bog pod you can make some with two fiber glass electric fence rods and some castrating rings and hockey tape. All found at your local farm store. About 10.00 to incase your like me and tend to lose things.

Titch- how often are you calling the same stand ? Your problem almost sounds call shy. I've had that as well giving them 3 weeks before going back may help a lot.

With my very limited exsperence I have found on a personal level that when you are working these sets on your own that a Bipod on the firearm is a better step then shooting sticks. I can set my gun that it stands pointing in the direction in front of me and the butt plate stays on my shoulder as I am operating the controller of the fox pro. I find this helps a lot with not making so much movement when or if a coyote comes running in tight to the set or if you happen to spot that standing investigating the call and decoy Yote...

I guess there are alot of opinions out there...I really like my shooting sticks, they can also be used as a walking stick, very versatile and light...

I have a cottontail in distress call. Even though it is winter were I am, do you think my distress call paired with crow call will work for Coyote? Crows have long migrated south from here. Only ravens around now.

This has been the second time in kind of the same place this winter for us. Same valley but about 1000yrds down. And it was a good 2-3 weeks apart.

I got a new place to go to this weekend so Ill give that place a chance to cool down. Ill get them eventually. Even if I have to spot and stalk them for a few hours. lol

Depends in your area sounds like you are in the prairies. In Ontario it's a lot tighter area to hunt. I get to know the dogs in my area pretty good based on trail cam pics. I'd say 1km or so. But that changes during mating season and if food is in short order. And there is also a dominance factor as well. Sooooo in short I can tell you one thing and they will do the opposite that's the best part of pred hunting tho is the constant learning curve.

I use a jack rabit call mostly in southern ontario and never seen a jack. So ya it will work.

Ok thanks guys. Just wanted to see how much they roam around.

I have never seen any rabbits around the area, but there is tons of deer
