Coyote Hunting Woes....

Can't seem to get any yet. Built my home made caller with 2 loud speakers. Using the calls from Varmint Al's. Today I had one at about 350 yards. Just sat and watched me. As I watched him through my scope a rabbit ran right in front of him. There was no reaction what so ever. If that can't draw him in I sure as hell can't. I was out tuesday too and just couldn't get them close. I just hope the new camo helps. Any tips to get them the rest of the way in?

Also looking for reccomendations on snowshoes. I'm tired of luggin throughwaist deep snow.

I missed one by about 15" (according to my spotter) at 550yds this morning from prone with my 270WSM. Should have seen the snow fly!! I'll get him yet.
 
I have found in the past that they will hang up for while but be patient, don't allow them to detect any movement or smell you. Many coyotes that have hung up on a distressed rabbit call fall for either a distressed coyote pup or a challenge howl.
Its getting close to mating season so Id suggest you pretty much use howls and your success should start to climb. Or you could just blast them off your deck in your gotch like BigRedd :D :D

350 is a little far for me yet. I'm not sure I can hit the paper at that distance yet. This is my first rifle and we are still getting to know eachother. I am able to get about a 3" group at 200 with cheapo ammo but have yet to really practice at 300 or further. I'm using a new ATR100 Mossberg. Shoots good so far. I'll maybe try some howls tommorow and let you know how it goes. Gonna try and spend a good part of the day out there. If he comes in close enough I'll take a shot.
 
Put out some meat , then you don't gotta know calling, and you can even measure the distance to the meat pile, So knowing much about ballistics is not a factor. But don't put it at 100 meters, and say you killed the coyote at 500 ;)

There could be a few reasons why that dog hung up. He could of been leaving his territory for another coyotes teritory, and didnt want to deal with a scrap over that dead rabbit. Or maybe he was just not interested in the tune you were singing, or he heard it before.
 
I have used a couple different sequences. One was the 16 minute one off Varmint Al's and another that I made that starts with 2 mins of silence and then goes to steady rabbit distress calls. There wan't one that was more productive than the other. I think I will try the bait thing soon. So do you bait and wait right away or come back later? I may try and make on of the ice blocks. I'm going to mount my new scope this weekend and try and get some 300 yard shooting in. If I can hit paper at 300 I will be pretty pleased with my self. I might try to bed the action to next week. We'll see though.
