Coyote Hunting

Not written in stone here, but it will take longer, from my experience anyways. So don't give up after 20-30 mins. Sometimes had to sit for an hour to an hour and a half.

Coyotes will not be nearly as responsive to calls during this time, & you will have to be exceptionally patient . The world is there refrigerator right now with insects, gophers and the rest of the food chain starting to wake up.

Whats the best time to call?
Dawn, Dusk, noon?
Thinking of trying some calling next time i head out to the gopher patch...

very early morning and just before dark is the best time. You might beable to catch a coyote out mousing the fields and coax him in closer. Everytime I try in the summer all I get is pissed off deer coming in checking out the sound. Any does that have fawns go ballistic thinking its their baby calling for help.

coyote death cry and pup is distress is a real good call right now. The females are pregnant or just had their young.

p.s I always sit for an hour before I move. Had had some take their sweetass time coming in, probably woken them up and they just wander in curiously when they arent even THAT hungry to eat.

man i can hear the pups out in the field behind my house, its great! im learning their sounds and can duplicate them pretty well with my Primos Raspy Coaxer :D

Around here, you start calling turkeys and in come the freakin' coyotes! A few years ago, one was pretty surprised to get a load of number 6s in the face when he was sneaking in on my hen decoy...:dancingbanana:

I have had two of my buddies shoot coyotes when calling turkeys, and have heard of a number of others who had similar experiences - including one lad that saw a coyote disappear with his decoy! :runaway:

But if you are calling turkeys and have a turkey deke out in Ontario, you had best be turkey hunting and have a licence and tag for turkeys............

x3 on the pup distress and fawn distress should work remember with distress calls always keep an eye on the down wind.

I'm sure if you were using a turkey call with a decoy and a say .22-250 the MNR wouldnt have much to say. Now if you had a 12ga with turkey load and a turkey choke then maybe you might get ####.

why does one hunt coyote's? are their pelts valuable? I haven't heard of eating coyote before? edjumicate me.

Some people sell their pelts, others, like me just like to make them dead. The land I occupy could do without them. A good coyote is a dead coyote.:)

Out turkey hunting the other morning..... we hear a coyote out in the distance... maybe an hour after sunrise....a few minutes later...here he comes running across the field with a rabbit in its mouth..... To far to shoot, but a nice sight....

Go talk with a farmer who has sheep, chickens, cattle, cats, goats ect....He may tell you why people hunt coyotes on their property.
Speak with pheasant hunters and they'll tell you a few more good reasons to blast coyotes.
I pose the question "why doesnt everyone hunt coyotes?"

I had one young male come along the edge of the bush last Saturday. Waltzed right into my decoy spread and decided to mark his territory on them! Little bastard won't do that again. Does anyone know what decoys are legal/illegal, and when, or is this just one of those grey areas.

back to Marlin.............if you have turkey decoys out, you had better be turkey hunting. And turkey season ends today here in Ontario.......

This is a good question. I have a relative that sometimes uses a deer decoy with his turkey decoys when hunting turkey, & when bow hunting for deer, he puts the turkey decoys out with his deer decoy. Apparently the two animals trust each other in detecting danger.
