Advice please.
I live semi rural if that makes sense and i need to find a way to protect my husky from nightly visits from a pack of coyotes. I'm considering adding a 223 bolt rifle to my collection based on the number of rounds i have available from my current prohibited collection.

Any recommendations without busting my budget. In southern Ontario and my distance from the pack is under 100 yards.

I bought a Ruger American Ranch in 223 with my Canadian tire money! I upgraded the rail to Talley rings and just have a 3-9x40 scope on it. I have only put mabey 100 round’s through it, but it’s extremely accurate for a cheap rifle! I love 16” barrel too. Very handy…

Ruger american with the ar 15 mag bottom metal would be a good contender, assuming you have a bunch of magazines laying around to go with the ammo.

Soft point bullets at 100 yds is good to go. Check the law about snares in your prov. Here we need a trappers licence. Snares work
24/7 but must be in a spot no dogs will go. It’s the same best way I’ve found to reduce the numbers. As for rifle most any will work at your range.

I've used 00 in my shotgun at closer ranges but it's getting out of hand now. Neighbor's chickens are disappearing and now that it's getting darker earlier, i can hear them trying to entice my dog to chace them out into the field. I reload my own ammo and I have some nice 223 rounds ready for the day. I normally hunt with Tikka for big game but don't see the need to go that quality for yotes. I was considering Ruger Ranch based on the cost and the close distance that I can call them in.

At that distance, any consideration for the 17 HMR? I have nailed quite a few on my farm when in a hurry and a pack is in my field I grab the Tikka T1x 17 HMR. When doing all day hunting I use my 6.5CM but I am looking to build a 22-250 or 22CM for specific coyote hunting.

I have a pair of Ruger Ranch rifles.....bought them both to "replace" my ARs and Mii14s as fast/compact/light/inexpensive mag fed varmint rifles.

They are a solid value....built Ruger tough...exceed typical Ruger accuracy.... like near moa with cheap ammo and sub moa with premium ammo.
They handle/carry well and are fast to deploy.

One wears a red dot and the other a low mag illuminated reticle scope...both optics rescued from my ARs...and use my AR mag fleet.

For the mission you are describing...and I have the same scenario here....a red dot equipped Ruger Ranch is ideal....get a small dot size .....my Busnell 1-4 illuminated reticle version is also pretty much ideal altho I have found I can make the same hits within 100m as good as the optic but faster and easier especially offhand/sling taut.

Mna oh man....a supressed version of this setup would be SO ideal...but alas

Also of not and worth consideration

I also have a pair of RR rifles in 762 rusky...also equipped one with dot and the other a 4x optic
They offer all the benefits of the 556 versions ...and are also very accurate....and offer a wider envelope of use as a bigger varmint/game rifle...
Mini30 enhance them
The rusky cartridge puts down coyotes with authority

For coyotes, the cartridge it not nearly so important as the projectile. Something lightweight, thin jacketed and ideally poly tipped is generally the best.

Coyotes are not particularly tough so any reasonable hit in the boiler room will anchor them pretty quickly.

I do some coyote clean up for a couple farmers that allow us to hunt geese and ducks on their land, I use a CZ 527 in 223 have it n a Boyd's AtOne stock, given that the fur is worthless this year I switched back to the 52gr HPBT match @ 3300 fps, they rip dogs up, I use a foxpro hammer jack with the fuzzy whopper, am at 6 so far in the last 5 weeks or so.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't electronic calls illegal in AB?
