Hi guys. I was contemplating .223 ballistics for coyotes when it occurred to me that I have no idea how big a 'yote will look in my 16x scope reticle @ 300m. Can you even pick an aiming point or do you just hold on the black mass in your scope FOV and hope for the best? Anyone have any pics or links to pics of scope pics? I did some googling and some searching here to see if I could find pics taken of scope views, but no luck.

coyotes arent black...:)

16x scope is plenty for a coyote size animal out to 500m, Ive shot them past 300m with a 6x

It's safe to go back to "contemplating ballistics" Scoop.

With a 16 power scope, you will be able to fit the entire coyote in your sight picture at 100 metres, so 300 will not be a problem.

But please stop shooting them with the .17. It's way too small for coyotes, so unless you're making headshots, and even then, that's a bad idea in my book.

On a "off" note, (no hijack intended here) I have been watching "Predator Quest" for a while now. So on to the question, What do you do with the "yote" after you have sent him to the next world?
I'm contemplating giving this type of hunt a whirl. Help me "fill in the blanks" troops.

:eek: I hope you are not serious. Please never pull the trigger when you are "hoping" for the best. Once you let that bullet go, there is no getting it back. You should always be 100 f-ing % sure what you are aiming at and what is behind it before you drop the hammer. Come on man, you gotta be joking. If not, please take a hunters course, or give it up. :slap:

Of course I'm sure when I squeeze the trigger. The statement was an illustration of my inexperience with seeing anything besides deer and moose in a scope. The longest shot I've taken on game was an honest 175m (lased after the fact), supported, on a moose. I don't shoot unless I'm sure. Thanks for being presumptuous. Just 'cause I'm a lurker doesn't mean I'm an asshat.

Oh, and as for the .17HMR on coyote; works fine @ 100m and less, it was a chest shot behind the left shoulder and broke the rib going in.

From my understanding.
If your hunting them you have to harvest the fur, illegal to let a fur bearing animal's fur goto waste(on PEI anyways).
If it's varmint control, do whatever you want, or let nature take care of it.

That statement alone is reason enough for disqualification. :runaway:
 
If you're getting in to predator hunting, try "predatorhuntcanada.ca", good website with lots of info on all aspects of predator hunting
