ive always wondered why people hunt coyotes...i enjoy shooting things as much as the next, but what can you do with a dead coyote besides stuff it or put it on your wall?
 
Coyotes are very efficient predators, they eat a lot of the partridges,squirrels,and drive most of the deer out of the area. Controlling the population of Yotes means less chance of disease as well. Ever seen a Yote with Mange in the middle of Jan? Its very unsettling to see an animal completely bald in 3 feet of snow. Mother nature has her own way of controlling the populations, some times not too pretty.
 
Wiley creatures, them coyotes. Just ask any roadrunner. Hardest part is disarming them but if you can wait long enough, their ACME equipment usually suffers catastrophic failure! ;)

.22 magnum is the minimum that could/should be used on coyotes,
but its effectice range is aprox.100-125 yards.
inside this, they work very well.
If you are going to hunt more open country,
you will need to move on up to the world of centre fire.:sniper:
 
Well, I would say that coyote hunting is my favorite type. They are by far the most challenging animal ive ever hunted, they are extremely smart. There is not too many things like the thrill of calling a coyote in to 10 yards and blasting him. I like my 22 hornet for coyotes from 200 yards or closer, one shot kills, little pelt damage, and its not loud enough to get the neighbors mad.

Sell it for profit after processing the hide for market. After gas bill there is no profit Ha Ha!...:D

I do it for fun, and make a few farmers happy, not to mention tuning up you're rifle shooting skill.:)
 
Do a rancher/farmer a favour by taking care of his coyote/gopher problem and he may be more apt to let you come round in duck/deer season. :)
 
Predator hunting is just plain fun and selling the pelts is a bonus. Although there are plenty of way better cartridge choices available (I like the .223) a .22 Long Rifle 40gr High Velocity load will put down any coyote within 75 yards or so with a shot in the chest. As a 15 year old kid, a single shot Cooey was all I had for hunting coyotes with my Burnham Bros. C-3 & C-4 calls. You learned pretty quick to not to pull the trigger unless you were sure of a hit or it was game over. Granted, it's not the most efficient cartridge choice but it will work in a pinch.

Some guys use a bow and arrow setup,some shotguns and some just use cameras. If all you have is a .22 then don't let that hold you back. Know your limitations and go with it. I have even hunted them with my .50 cal muzzle loader with a patched round ball. What ever it takes to get out in the field and have some fun,do it.
 
Coyote hunting keeps me busy after deer season is over,although I hunt harder in March & April,trying to knock the population down before the whitetails fawn.The yotes work the ridges during fawning and have killed several on my place so I do my best to thin them out! Mur

At the NAFA sale in May '08, coyotes averaged $21 - $33. And that's for carefully cased, fleshed, stretched & dried pelts. I keep hearing fellows claiming to get $20 for whole, unskinned coyotes! Why can't I find buyers willing to do all the work for a mere $10 or so :confused:
 
I was watching a Coyote hunting DVD with my two young daughters. One thing they picked up on right away was that one of the coyotes shot, was taken near an area infested with "kangaroo rats", of which the dog was stuffed. The hunter, who was also a farmer complained about the rats destroying his crops.

Ironic don't you think.
