Looking to shoot a few this year on my deer properties.

What is the best way to do it??

Also, might pick up a small, cheap rifle. 17HMR or 22mag??? Don't want a centerfire.

Would use my slug gun but not legal here. Maybe the SP-10 with buckshot? Got a 10/22 that is super accurate, or is that too light?

Any help or advice is appreciated.

As well, what to do with one when it's dead??

Skin it and leave the meat for the other animals or pick up a chinese cook book and look for dog recipes.

I wouldnt use a 22 on a coyote, I would go with heavier round or a shotgun with hevi shot 00

Centerfire is definitly the way to go. I used a 22-250 to great effect.

I had great success calling coyotes blowing on a predator call.

Skin it if you want the hide. Leave the rest.

smak daddy is right, the best way is calling them in. A 22 is too light, even though it will kill a coyote. Just my opinion, but I think that the 17 HMR and 22 Magnum are also too light.

I'd say 22mag and 17hmr are too light too. My cousin has got 2 with the 17hmr, but they were both head shots from 80 yards or less and he had to give one of them a second shot. Too much margin for error and

stevens 200 in .223 is a small/cheap rifle :)

90% of the yote hunting I do is with a 22mag.. the rest is with .30carbine. I've never had to put more than one of either into a dog to get the job done.

..and as for .17hmr, there's lots discussion on that. For the record I have dropped a yote with a .17hmr through the front breast. Didn't even kick when the lights went out. Is it for everyone, certainly not. But it does make a nice small hole. Don't even try .22LR.

.22mag is my favorite because it's cheap, readily available and effective. I could easilly go out with my .308 but at multiple times the cost per round.. why? No reloading required, can shoot down to Crappy tire for ammo. Sometimes I go out for predator control on farmers fields and if I see that they're packing I'll take out the .30carbine because I can get rounds off faster and it makes me feel like a man. ;) But it's expensive.

I would have to say by my experience that if you're going to dispatch a yote with a .22wm or a .17 is that you had better be a good caller and can bring them in REAL close. I'd suggest a .223 or a 22-250 as they are very cunning and very fast. I'm also going to consider my .270WSM for yotes, but that's another thread.

I have taken a number of coyotes with my .22 Mag but I have kept my shots under 100 yards. I have only used the "higher end" ammo (Win Supreme & Rem Premier) and have always had one shot kills.

You obviously hunt ducks so just stoke your 12 gauge with #4 buck and tie an old duck or goose wing to a branch and let it flutter in the wind and then toot on your yote call and then the yote will come to the motion and you drop the hammer on it.

Not knowing the type of area you hunt get a few friends and try pushing coyotes on foot in snow. They are like deer and are easy to pattern. We got rid of our dogs and are as, if not more effective. We do not have to look for our dogs and the trackers know when to come out. You need a centre fire for open country but shotgun will do in bush with #4 buck.

.22LR is definitely too light for reliable kills. If you want to pick up a rimfire, the .22 mag will work out to 150 yards with careful shot placement. Not sure about the 17HMR, but should be similar to .22mag as long as you use a relatively sturdy bullet. Really, the best advice is to phone your friend in Kingston and have him come up to help you out with all your questions. :p Have FoxPro, will travel. A two man calling team works great with one guy armed with a shotgun and either Dead Coyote or #4 buck. I've got several different .22 CF's too, so there's always a loaner rifle at the ready if needed. :D
