Coyote rifle for a friend

if you are going to mess with .223 at longer ranges pay close attention to the barrel twist youre getting.
theres quite a large variance in .223 factory barrel twist rates these days and some will not stabilize the larger bullets at all.
my older 1:12 twist 700P will not stabilize the larger hornady 68 grain and sierra 69 grain bullets, just bullets under 60 grains. even common 62 grainers dont stabilize properly.

Short action Savage,
My vote is the 243 Winchester.
Or for some real smack a 308 Winchester.
Just another thought, If it were not for the factory ammo required 250 Savage would be a good choice or the ,
257 Roberts

my varminting rifles are as follows;

.223 with 45gr JHP @3500fps out of 22" 1/12"twist bbl, good to 300yds
.22-250 with 55gr ball.tip @3800fps out of 24" 1/14"twist bbl good to 400+yds
.243 with 70gr ball.tip @3700fps out of 26" 1/9.125"twist bbl good to 500+yds
.308 with 110gr ball.tip @3200fps out of 24" 1/12"twist bbl good to 600+yds

the determining factors in which rifle i choose(if i only take one) is the animal i want to kill, the ranges i expect to be shooting at and the conditions i expect to be shooting under.

"IF" i were to limit myself to one all-around cartridge it would be a .243 with the appropriate rate of twist for the bullet i wanted to shoot.

your friend should start by asking himself what calibre/weight bullet does he want to push at what velocity and what does he want it to do when it gets to the target(animal) and what is that target going to be. a bullet that will kill a wolf will kill a coyote at reasonable ranges. but the inverse is not necessarily true. a .243 can also pull double duty as a varmint/deer rifle which makes it very attractive to people who only want one all-around type of rifle.
i own two .243's, one is a dedicated varminter(big long and heavy, w/a big heavy scope), the other is a stainless synthetic Tikka T3 i use for deer and the odd-target-of-opportunity coyote.

hope this has been helpful.

good luck and good shooting,

i.

I have of have had most of the 22 cf that have factory ammo. My coyote gun is a 243. At range it still kills better. I dont have a 6mm but assume it would also be good.Just my .02 good luck AJ

Don't pay attention to Bartell, this is the way he's gonna leave this world.

BUWAHAHAHAHAH! That's the funniest thing I've seen in a LOOONG time! :D

I'd choose .223 - only because that's what I chose and need to justify my choice. haha actually, I shoot gophers mainly, and didn't need a .243.

However, if I wanted a dedicated Coyote rig - it'd be .243

.243 vote here too, but as far as unfriendly on fur the light (58 gr) Varminators, now Varmint Grenades, aren't bad. At 4000 fps and the right optics 500 yds is a riot from a rest and you're less than 23" low at 500 when zeroed at 250 (about 1.2" high @ 100) Factory 55 Supremes do pretty much the same and as pointed out, there's a ton of bullet choices

I settled on a .243 also. 58's & 70's are fun, but ended up going with Sierra 85 gr. bthp game kings. These work from in your face to way out there. They seem better in the wind. Nosler also makes a 85 gr. partition for a double duty rig.

Good Shooting

my 243 shooting 70 grainers is my usual 500-600 yard plinking gun. I also use my 7mm08, 260 Rem for long range plinking as they're much less susceptible to the wind. Furthermore, I have an 8" twist 223 that I fully intend for use past the quarter-mile marker
