I just need to pick the brains of more experienced outdoorsmen this A.M. While out hunting this morning, I came across a trail of canine tracks. These suckers were pretty big, as in 2 1/2 to 3" across. Is there any chance these are coyote or are they most likely farm dogs running around. There were some smaller ones as well, which I was sure would be coyote tracks, the bigs just had me puzzled. I have never seen any dogs around there, but there are farms and homes within 5-600yds from there.

I think four, but I didn't pay special attention to it. I'll try to get some pics when I go back out this aft. I didn't know the yote's tracks were more oval than round, I'll check that as well.

Except in very soft ground, coyote tracks are pretty easy to distinguish from domestic canine. Post some pics if you can.

The ground is quite soft where I hunt, but the impressions are quite deep in some spots. There are no wolves in my area at least that anyone knows of.
I took these pics this afternoon, the shiny circle beside it is a twoonie, too much glare I guess.
Anyway, I'm starting to wonder if the farmer's dog was running around the fields while he was working them, as the had been worked recently.

And this is what I was hoping to run into.

Coyote's don't have a manicurist or master to clip their nails, thus look for their toenail imprints in the mud & snow. One of their most favourite pasttimes is running/pooping on logging roads & hiking trails. If there are any around, that's where you'll find their sign.

After what you guys were saying regarding shape etc. I'm pretty sure they came from the farmer's dog. I was just starting to wonder how big these things must get around here. Thought I might have to carry the 12ga for coyote defence. :D

mos def not a coyote, ever seen the mits on a pyranese? And even if there are none in your area those dogs wander huge distances. Another thing to look for in canine tracks is how the rest of them are patterned. Fido walks very sloppy with tracks here and fro, where a coyote is dedicated to a path and its tracks will be nearly perfect in-line.
