Coyote,Would you hunt with a 22 Stinger?

Its a good point you make about noise. 17 honet 22 hornet, 17 fireball are all way quiter than 223 or 22-250. And thats especially nice when shooting arround occupied farm land etc.

I myself us a .22 hornet for coyotes and given certain scenarios would use it on deer although I don't usually pack it until after deer season is closed and bring it solely for the purpose of hunting coyotes and bobcats. Also a great caliber for dropping treed cats. And great all around trapping gun in addition. After finding enough ammo to provide brass for a lifetime of course. I find it better than the 223 in terms of comfort but that's more or less the gun than the caliber, it's also easier on the ears.

Definitely. Sometimes you've got to drop a yote around livestock and don't want to startle them to bad. Or even gun shy dogs in terms of cat hunting. Other such calibers like the 218 bee and 22 fireball are silent killers...well.....silent-er. I always thought about building a 224 Weatherby for the longer shots. But I've got a not so secret love for Weatherby calibers.

Maybe under 40 yards if you were a cracker shot and could guarantee a head shot. Otherwise do the humane thing and step up to a 223 or greater.

Cheers

No, definitely not a head shot. Great danger of wounding with a head shot.
I would not use the Stinger, or any other high speed, light weight bullet in the 22 rim fire.
However, I certainly would shoot a coyote with the 22 rim fire, using long rifle ammo, and the best long rifle would be the high velocity type that go about 1300 fps and preferably I would have those in hollow point.
The lung area of a coyote is quite big and any LR hit in there is deadly for the yote.

I've shot one coyote at roughly 25yards off hand, open sights from a Lakefield 64B. Hit him right behind the shoulder. It just started yelping and doing circles really fast. It wasn't going anywhere..... However, I ran up to it and fired the remaining 9 shots into it.. Never moved again.

I am recovering from a surgery to my collar bone and cannot fire my "coyote gun" ( .22-250 ) as of yet. So I'm going to head out this week and and specifically take my Magnum Research .22 Magnum Lite with 40g Maximags.

A .22 magnum is better suited over the .22lr but... I'd have no issues taking my custom .22 either... Tack driver at 50yrds..

IF you have lots of range time, have a tack driver, KNOW your range in the field ( via range finder ) any head shot out to 100yrds with a .22lr or Mag is NO issue.....

BUT... IF I could shoulder my .22-250 would I?? Hell yes!
