Coyotes and Foxes

I've shot yotes with many different rifles, 300WM to .22RF the results varied widely :)

I am also a trapper and have used snares and springs, also non spring snares and leghold traps, but only in areas where there may be dogs. I don't like using traps or snares if there is a chance that someone's dog might end up in the trap.

when I'm specifically hunting yotes I will use my 22-250, however the last yote I shot I was on my back step in my bathrobe and used a 22RF. The other choice I have is the 20gauge, but the yote was near my back fence and that's a little too far for shotgun. There are also issues with danger templates as I have neighbors and the 22-250 is a little too effective. The 22RF is fine 22WMR or 22 Hornet might be better but I don't have a rifle set up for either of those calibers that is handy.

since I shot that one the others have been keeping their distance. It was getting bad as the yotes tried twice to take my neighbors dog once while it was sitting on the deck with them, and my small dogs were going crazy with the yotes running around in my back yard.

So to sum up. 223 is good but remember that bullet is going to carry a fair distance and still be dangerous. A 22 RF is effective but it is likely that the yote is going to take a little while to die (perhaps a min) and a 300WM makes a hell of a mess of a yote but is very effective, but don't expect to salvage a good pelt, even if your good at sewing.
