The 22 magnum works just fine on these animals if limited to head shots-would the 17 FMG be as good, or worse?

Not sure about the .17 but yes .22 mag works good. Friends farm he downs them with 17 hmr

the .17hmr[ i don't know whats .17fmg] is only 17grains in weight while a 22lr is 40 grains on average.its quite a difference in bullet weight.i don't know what the 22mag is but i would say its even heavier.basically,if you hit anything in the brain though,it'll drop.a .17 on a coyote?it wouldn't be my choice of calibre,but it should work.

Yes, I would also prefer somthing larger. .308 22-250........
