This summer I've been enjoying coyote hunting in the Gimli area. Unfortunately it's quite a drive so I am looking for new coyote hunting areas in Southern Manitoba, espically areas just South of Winnipeg.

South of Winnipeg it seems that there is little forested area and cover and not as many livestock operations as in the North.

Before I start randamly canvassing farms, can someone point me to an area known or is likely to contain coyotes?

I hear up in the Libau are there's plenty of coyotes. One fella I talked to said one time he left his dog leashed on the front steps, while he drove into town. When he got back an hour later the only thing left of the dog was his head, leash and a pile of blood they dragged the body away.

A couple years earlier coyotes lured his unleashed dog out of the yard, and then ripped him to shreds, with not much left. They can act real friendly when they want to trick a naive housedog.

Even near Bird's Hill I hear coyotes are bad. Injured one horse so bad he had to be put down. They get lots of farmer's ducks and chickens too around there.

Near Gimli the coyotes are taking a few calves and lambs. They take many more domestic dogs and they seem to like cats a lot. While calling we've also had a few wolves respond with howls. Lots to hunt in the interlake but unfortunately I can't make it out there that often.

If you are planning to use a centre-fire rifle you should check RM bylaws for the areas you're planning to hunt. A number of the RMs to the south of WPG have ordinances prohibiting the discharge of centre-fire rifles.

Follow the Lasalle River this winter. Main farmland drainage ditches are great runways for yotes and reds. Sanford area is pretty good all the way to Morris. Hunting is even better as you get around the Mennonite communities in SW Manitoba since most of them are anti hunting. Found alot of them kicking around nearby hog barns.

Tikka... I've already checked and none of the RMs have an all out ban on CF rifles. There are some areas within 6 km of Winnipeg as well as near towns etc that no firearm may be discharged. One of the RMs kindly provided me with a map that I couold forward if you are interested.

Smallblock. Thanks for the info. I'll have to scout around out there.
