So I went out for a ride on the Quad today. Out in Chilliwack, Tamahai area. I took my .22 along as I wanted to do some plinking. After some target practice I went exploring further back in the area. I came across a Coyote after rounding a bend. We both just stopped and stared at each other for a bit. He then came my way so I rode towards him a bit at which point he disappeared back into the heavy bush.

Just curious, are Coyotes considered a pest species in BC, Fraser Valley? ( I need to take a CORE course )

They are in the hunting regs. Protected to the extent there is a season and it ended June 15

coyote 2-2 to 2-19 sept 10 - June 15 NBL

No shooting 0.8 Km., either side of the road.

I would think you need both a hunting licence and Special Area Licence.

4Fraser Valley Special Area - Hunters should take note of the special licence area in the Fraser Valley (see Map B10). These special licences are available through selected private outlets. For further information, contact a Service BC’s office.
No Shooting Areas or No Hunting Areas: Hunters should be aware of these areas as outlined on page 13 and regional maps.

And one would/does need to have a hunting Lic. to shoot a Coyote on Crown Land in a lawful season too.

I don't want to be a party pooper but you know you can't have a loaded rifle on a quad ,nor can you shoot while sitting on it

As has been said you need to have a hunting license and a Fraser Valley special area license. They certainly can be a pest if you pasture cattle. I've lost a couple cows to coyotes, one that got herself stuck and one that started calving prematurely and the calf pinched the nerve in her pelvis effectively paralyzing her hind legs. These are two exceptional circumstances though in about 40 years of dairying. Mostly coyotes are just a pest to small dogs and cats.

Obviously Farmers in Sask and Man are different. Coyotes here love fawns and calves....farmers don't really like loosing calves worth $1200. They also raid the nest of upland and waterfowl.

This farmer agrees with you. Saying that, I like coyotes. They provide a challenging target when most other game animals in our area are closed. From Dec 10 to June 15, except for spring bear, they are all we have outside of crows to keep the rifle happy.

I was born and raised in the lower mainland, moved away when I was 25. There wasn't a lot of incentive to shoot or own guns in Richmond/Vancouver but I imagine out in the valley and more wide open areas there must be plenty of fun to be had.

We may not be able to hunt in Richmond but we have the coyotes...right by the airport off Russ Baker one early Saturday morning
