Which is better, early morning or later in the day? My afternoon hunts last year were not overly sucessful. I am hunting in Eastern Ontario, south of Ottawa on a couple of farms I have access to. Any real world advice out there?

Thanks.

I hunt all times of the day. At dawn I will set up on field edges, after about 9am I hit the bush. Set up a couple yards inside the bush with the wind blowing out to the field and caller about 50 yards in front of me. Sit with the shotgun and wait, my cousin gave me this idea, our success rate has quadrupled now instead of always trying to bring them out into the fields. Hunt all day like that at different spots then right at dark set up in a field somewhere with the howler and full coyote decoy and wait. My cousin shot 3 the other day like that, one was a pure black one as well.

I believe that the coyote is the toughest animal to hunt in Eastern Ontario and that most days are not met with success. The days that you actually call one in are the ones that bring you back out again. If it was easy, everyone would do it. :) Good luck with your hunts this winter.

I like to hunt off the solunar tables when it comes to coyotes, when the weather stays consistant for a bit the solunar tables will indicate good movement times. In my experience coyotes don't prefer just morning and evening hours to hunt or relocate.
Early morning calling with a howler will give a decent reference to set up for a later hunt, but it certainly isn't a sure fire way to know where to call, or what sequence to use.
You need to see what your coyotes are doing, a dog that is moving at sun up today could very well run at noon tomorrow. Moon phase and weather (food availability) are key.
To answer the question, best time to hunt coyotes is when they feel the need to eat.
Good luck and have fun!

I read about this last year in a magazine article I have been planning on giving it a try but haven't gotten around to it yet.

The article basically stated put the caller 5 yards into the bush and set up 20 - 25 yards into the bush with the wind blowing into your face and a shotgun is a must the action will be up close and fast.
