Strange behaviour (self-cannibalism aside)is generally an indication of something gone wrong in the animal. If it was keeping an eye on him and/or his wife, he was right to shoot it before it potentially did something drastic. He might consider giving its head to whatever passes for the DNR there for a rabies check.

As for your buddy, tell him to work on his aim. Varmint or not, any animal deserves a quick death.
