I'm considering one of these rifles but I shoot left-handed and am concerned about getting hot brass in the face. Has anyone solved this potential problem?

I had one, and had the same issue.

I tried to epoxy and glue various pieces into place as a brass deflector, and nothing worked. Well, it would work awesome for about 200 rounds, and then come flying off. I never did find a good solution. I don't have access to a welder or anything more permanant than epoxy...

A possible short term fix may be to clip a ring or two off the extractor spring ? Might decrease the force at which those suckers fly back.

I just held my cheek tight on the stock, nose on the CH, and the cases JUST missed my face. I'd have long lines from the odd brass that would catch my cheek!

My buddy has a 311 and I made this as a favour out of sheet metal using a dremel. It is filled with epoxy to protect the finish. It fits over the top and can be readily removed. And it works as evident from the paint chips.

The forward part wraps around the top, and at the risk of getting RedGreen jokes, it stays on with a small strip of duct tape. It absolutely does not come off in use, but is easily pulled off. I made a template out of thin cardboard, tried it out, then pasted it to the sheet metal. A cut wheel, a pair of pliers for bending, and fill with epoxy, about 30 minutes.

Long before the forward assist was fitted the first time, to the first M-16, armourers modified AR-15's/M-16's for left handed shooters by cutting 2 or 3 coils off of the ejector spring. It is a simple fix and takes but a couple of minutes! It works quite well on the 311 as I have done it on about 5 of them. Your brass then goes almost directly to the right and not into the side of your head. Speaking as someone in my right mind of course.
