CQB Practice

So if this a bring what you have deal, what's the word on using a revolver?

If you watch the video, you will see me reload the 1911 against the clock. You could use a revolver, BUT you would probably have to shoot it double action (time constraints) and you would have to be very good at reloading quickly.

I think any semi would be more competitive.

BUT, now that I think about it, most of get no points at all on the pistol stages because we miss the head shots. If a guy used a revolver and planned on just shooting the 3 shots (no reload) he could fire all 3 shots single action and might have a better chance at the headshot. 12 to 15 points would be much better than the 0 we often get with a pistol.

How about people just friggin' learn to shoot better rather than find ways to game and compete against the spirit of the match.

The organizers will simple change the rules to keep people competing fairly and in accordance with the spirit of the event.

Gamers don't win these events, the best shooters do. One of the purposes of any competitive event is to develop skills, gaming is counter to that.

Is the pistol segment at 100yds? Why do guys consistently miss the head shot?

The 25 yd shot can be fairly challenging. Draw, rack the slide, 2 shots to the body, one to the head, mag change, two to the body
one to the head on the second target, in 10 seconds. The scoring area is basically the mouth and face. Hits to the vest and helmet don't count. If you miss the headshot, you get zero points for pistol on that target. There is also no gaming by taking the headshot first.

Safe, modern handgun is what is required. 1911s and many revolvers qualify. Avoid single action revolvers. Bring speed loaders or moon clips of your revolver accepts them.

I wasn't aware that revolvers could be used. One of the reasons I haven't tried CQB. I shoot a revolver much better than an auto. Have I had it wrong all this time?

I'm guessing if you're only allowed to load 3 then have to reload 3 this would be the issue with the revolver. You would have to make sure you index your 3 rounds so you're not pulling the trigger on empty cylinders.

There is plenty of time to index the first 3. But the reload with 3 would hurried.

I shoot a variety of rifles in CQB, and a variety of handguns because I like to exercise with them and learn their strengths and weaknesses. I shot it with a Lee Enfield once. I guess I could try my 625 in 45ACP with moonclips, too.

If I concentrated with just my "best" rifle and "best" pistol I would get higher scores and would show more improvement. I enjoy competing, but I also enjoy shooting some of my rifles that would otherwise never get shot.

Start with 6, shoot 3, unload all, reload with 6, shoot 3. The spirit of the reload is (or at least should be) to force you quickly and efficiently reload, and who speed reloads with half a moon clip or a half filled speed loader.

So then, with a pistol, am I loading only 5 per mag? And if so, do I get to fire all 5 then reload and fire 5 more, if required to get the requisite hits? (Provided of course I am within the time limit) or do I only get 3 shots per target to make my headshot/2 body shots?

Two stages have two to the body and one to the head on each target. In these stages, you can only carry two mags with 3 rounds each in them. One stage has 5 shots to each head, you can only carry two mags with 5 rounds each in them for that stage. The reload is mandatory, and you have to split the rounds up between the two mags equally. If you miss, you miss. Points lost, too bad, so sad...

So then, I really need to work on my short game if every round has to hit the target...good to know. Back to the woodshed I guess.

Long range game... On one stage the pistol shots are at 25 yards. If you don't get the head shots, the body shots don't count.

If shooting a revolver, I believe holster selection may be another contributing factor for difficulty. A reliable holster is a must. You need it to securely retain your sidearm while running, lying prone, etc... When you need to use it, it has to be readily accessible and quick to draw.
