CQB preparation

My Norinco M4gery and ammo are ready to go for the new CBQ season. The only two improvements the Norinco M4 needed was a better trigger (I installed a Rock River) and a sight. I installed a cheap 1.5 – 5x shotgun scope. To raise the sight high enough to be able to look through comfortably, just installed it on some cheap see-thru rings.

I converted it to a floating barrel with a short tube and installed a fancy-dancy muzzle brake. I doubt that either “improvement” will have any positive impact on CQB scores.

But there are two things I have done that might help scores. First, I had a pair of special shooting glasses made up. Total cost $75. They consist of my ordinary bi-focal for my left (non-shooting) eye and a single lens for my right eye with a prescription for a reading glass, except I am “reading” farther out. I wanted lens that would allow me to easily focus on my front sight. It seems to make things in the 2 feet to six feet zone nice and sharp. The targets are a bit blurry, but that does not matter. So long as my pistol sight picture is sharp, the target does not matter.

But this makes the scope fuzzy, too. It was set for 20-20 (corrected) vision. I re-focused the rifle scope, using my shooting glasses. Now it is sharp, too. The only downside to this is that my rifle cannot now be lent to anyone else because the scope would be fuzzy for them.

I make low velocity ammo for CBQ. For 25 yards, you don’t need to beat up the gun with full power ammo. I use 16 gr of Win 680 (similar in speed to 4227) for a load that cycles the action just fine, but kicks out the 55 gr FMJ bullet at a relaxed 2300 fps. It groups 2” at 100yards, which translates to ½” for CQB distances. Plenty good enough.

RR triggers are available in two weights. Mine is the match trigger and I am guessing it is around 2.5 pounds.

So far as I know there is no trigger weight for ORA CQB. There might be for Service Rifle.

Trigger pull for ORA Service Rifle or CQB ? Darned if I know and I'm the organizer. No seriously, we don't enforce one. On the other hand, if your rifle or you are unsafe on the line, that's a different issue!

All I know is for SR at NSCC, 2 kg is the min trigger weight IIRC.

Cheers,

How do find the let off on yours? Is it crisp. Mine is kind of....not crisp. First stage is about 2 lbs and then second at 2.5 lbs. You can feel them, if you really concentrate.

I've actually gotten used to it. I think I like it a little better than my stock Norc which is crisp but 7 lbs

Well, its started.
A first class competitor shooting low recoil handloaded ammunition in a tube gun with match trigger, wearing special custom glasses.

Is that a....... space gun??

“Well, its started.

I know you said that with tongue in cheek.

The main advantage, equipment wise, is wearing my pistol shooting glasses. My eyesight is not good. Without glasses, I am legally blind. And I need a lens to focus on a pistol sight.

I have two pairs of shooting glasses. One allows me to focus on a rifle front sight. The other pair is for a pistol. CBQ requires me to shoot both rifle and handgun. So I wear my pistol glasses and use an optic rifle sight, focused to work with the pistol lens.

The pistol glasses are cheap frames and cheap plastic lenses. left is my usual bi-focal, right is single reading with correction lens for 30" focus.

I make ammo tailored for each discipline I shoot. The requirements differ. CBQ is easy. All it has to do is go bang. Accuracy at 25 yards is not an issue. The 55 gr FMJ bullets I use are pulled bullets I bought real cheap. The pull marks may look ugly, but the holes are still where I aimed at close range. Have not tried them beyond 100.

The gas port on the M4 is closer to the chamber than on a regular rifle. I download the ammo to save beating up my “expensive” Norinco. At 25 yards there is no need to shoot full power.

When I tested my rifle, I found it did not shoot the Winchester White Box 55 gr FMJ very well. It patterned 5.5” at 100 yards with me shooting prone off sand bags. So I developed a CBQ load (55 gr pulled bullets, loaded mild) and 62 gr bullets, loaded 90% for 100 to 300 yards. Here is what the groups look like in my rifle:

When I shoot prone, I like to rest the mag on the ground. Keith Cunningham tells me that by holding the forend, with mag on ground, I can flex barrel enough to make big deflections on target. This is why I floated the barrel. As I said in my post, this change will make no difference in CBQ.

As for the trigger… I love crisp triggers and detest long draggy ones. It was the best $95 I ever spent on a rifle. I don’t know if it will improve my CBQ scores, but I will enjoy the shooting more, for sure.

That's why I used the;), although anyone who knows you is aware that the "first class competitor" isn't tongue in cheek.
I wear fixed focus glasses when shooting pistol, to see the sights clearly, target blurs a bit. Don't need glasses for a 'scope, except for an Elcan, which is not adjustable for vision. To use my Elcan, I wear my pistol shooting glasses. Sort of negates one of the advantages of a scope. With a regular scope I just about have to unscrew the ocular to get the reticle in focus. If I use a small enough aperture, and a long enough barrel, I can still shoot irons.
Here is another hint from Keith and Linda - when wrapping your hand around the front of the mag. well, wrap your thumb too; don't keep it vertical, pressing against the side of the housing. Induces a lateral stress.

I would enjoy most of the old service rifle program, but the new one sounds like it includes calesthetics. Not my forte...

I think I will just switch to my other scope and use the M4gery to shoot the Vintage Rifle shoot at 100,200 and 300. Deliberate, Snap amd Movers without the sprinting.

Oops. Just got my Spring 2011 ORA Journal.
"8. Trigger pull is enforced. Due to the nature of some of the matches this is a safety factor. C7/AR 15 type rifles - not less than 2.5 kg Lee Enfield No. 4 .303 - first pull not less than 1.36 kg - second pull not less than 2.26 kg.
9. All other rifles trigger pull should not be less than 2.5 kg. No hair triggers are allowed."
