cracked bolt.

Thanks everyone
Damn shame it's a beautiful stock but if its going to try kill me every time I fire the rifle I guess it's back to the plastic again.

expensive mistake :(

I'd suggest you take the entire rig to a competent gunsmith (M14 Doctor would be the best, if he has the time IMO) and have it checked over. They could do any final stock fitting and let you know what caused the problem. I wouldn't give up on the Boyds' stock just yet. Thousands of people use them, very satisfactorily. BTW, have you ever had the headspace checked? Given that you were using 42 gr. loads, there's no way you could have gotten a double charge into the case without noticing.

might take it to gunsmith at club to look at stock but would rather play it safe, so will see.
I was asked if double charged but that impossible, if I had double charged the powder would be all over the loading bench, at 42 gr the powder is just about at shoulder of case.

Still, the OP and all of us - or most of us - don't know WHY that right lug on that M305 bolt let go. What happened ? Metallurgy, heat treatment, etc.

On some other forums (namely m14tfl.com), such an event would be cause for much concern and people would try to study very carefully the ins and outs of the case.

Usually, we see that kind of occurence only on Springfield Armory Inc (SAI) M1A rifles - with non USGI bolts. After all, that bolt is a chinese FORGED bolt and there are thousands upon thousands of chinese M14 type rifles - with forged bolts - in Canada. That could happen again.

A trip to a knowledgeable gunsmith seems to be a very good idea.

Sounds to me like hammer-follow resulting from improper relationship between stock, trigger group, and receiver causing improper disconnector engagement...see the stickies on function check for more info. although the firing pin bridge is supposed to prevent out-of-battery ignition I've seen lots of m1a type rifles where either the bridge was out of spec or the firing pin tang was chipped or out-of-spec.

Anyway...I would replace the bolt, and seriously test the rifle/stock combo for hammer follow. You will also likely have to replace the stock.

Send me a pm...I can hook you up with a new bolt.

Cheers,

Brobee

+1. If you don't know what to check for proper function when replacing a stock ,this is the failure than can (and does) result.

I recently posted a video on this forum about the trigger test, maybe you could take a look, it doesnt hurt to see it done in video to be 100% sure you do the right test :)

I checked the videos, the stickies and made sure that it passed before taking it to the range, but either it was something else, or i took to much material off, but it passed, when i get a new bolt i will take it to a gunsmith to look at.

I posted, near the bottom of the page.

A few more questions since you mentioned the op rod jumping off the bolt roller..

Have you checked the indexing of the op rod guide? Some are off centre. I think a poorly tracking op rod might contribute to this.

About your new stock.. Does it have the pocket milled out for the longer US op rod spring guide retention pin? If so see the 'popsickle stick fix' sticky for ideas.

I did notice the retention pin had been pushed out when i took the new stock off

a little wiggle yes, but thought that was normal
So just to confirm. The band that conect the barrel to the oprod as pictured here:
photojzl.jpg

Is loose & also the retainer pin for the op-rod guide pops out when fireing? Show here:

The band that connects the op rod to the barrel wiggles, and the retainer pin was out as shown, I'm not sure if this happened while firing, but it was out as shown when i removed the stock after the bolt broke.

will take pics of the band and post later
