Cracked my SKS Stock

Well, this sucks. I removed the action from the stock of my Norinco SKS to see if it had a pinned barrel today, which it does, and when I was separating the two it cracked right by the bolt thing that goes through both sides of the stock under the barrel. It is not cracked all the way though, only about 1/2 way. When the rifle is reassembled it holds everything together snugly. Can I use some strong glue on the crack to hold it together and still shoot it safely? I only ask this because I recently refinished the stock and don't really want to go back to the old style. I still can't believe it cracked because I wasn't being rough with it or anything. Thanks for any advice you can give, I feel like an idiot now. :D

Don't feel like an idiot. Consider the split a gift from your guardian angel.

Now, get into your car, drive to Epps, and buy the SKS ATI stock that I should have bought when I was there.

I hope it's still there for you. It's on the north wall in the reloading area just before you go into the gun room corridor.

So it won't be safe just to glue it? I can't wait to go through all that refinishing again, but I suppose thats better than getting a big chunk of metal in the face. :D

I would bet that you did not remove the magazine before trying to remove the action from the stock. No sense glueing that stock, they are not that great to begin with.

I took it apart the same way I do every time, remove the top cover, the spring assembly, bolt and carrier, then the trigger group, the magazine, and finally lever the action out of the stock. The wood must have been really dry or something because I wasn't putting very much pressure on it. I could have weakened it with all the sanding too. Either way, I'll try gluing it then let my friend try the first few shots at the range. J/K about the last part. :D

I would recommend just buying a new stock. My Norinco SKS receiver became very loose in the wood stock after a few thousand rounds. I tried to tighten it, to little success. I replaced the stock and used the old one for kindling in my woodstove.

Hope you either took the finish off first, or have a really crappy stove.

If I put my oiled up, shellac stock in my fireplace, I'd probably bust the catalytic converter. Wood and only wood!

There's a lot of weird stuff in gun stocks...
