I was cleaning my P13-45 yesterday when I noticed a crack in the slide just behind the front serrations. It runs the height of the slide and continues along the underrail. This surprised and shocked the hell out of me. I've owned it since 2002 and have less than 1000 rounds through it. I shoot factory and 230 ball with 4.5 - 5 grains of 231 powder - not a hot load by any stretch.

I am just wondering if anyone else has had any problems like this. I e-mailed ParaOrdnance and said I was going to send the slide to them to look at. I want it replced so I might end up sending the whole gun for proper fitting.

Para will take care of you. They usually have very high level of customer service. The Customer Service manager name is George, I can't remember his last name, but they usually strive to make it right.

They will probably want the whole gun back regardless.

Para Ordnance is one of only two 1911 manufacturers that I'm aware of (the other being Armscor of the Philippines) to use cast slides. Castings do not make for very good slide material (though cast frames are usually okay). I'd wager a guess that your slide had a weak area created by the bubbles trapped in the mold.

I had one that cracked by the ejection port,Para will replace and fit the slide for free, you will have to ship it to their repair depot (North Sylva)They wouldn't say no charge in the e-mail just to ship it and they would look at it.

I'd be surprised if that is so. It's relatively easy to detect bubbles in the wax or plastic prior to investment. There are other phenomena that can cause investment castings to be weak, but that is the least likely of them, particularly in a company that is experienced in such operations.

There is one shooter at my club that had a cracked slide on a P13. He shot a round and it made a strange bang. The slide cracked straight up from the dust cover, both sides of the slide. He got it replaced free and it shoots better than it did before.

i have seen a couple 1911 have a cracked slide b4... it was on a colt and a para ... it is a manufacturer problem. good thing you detected it. just send it back to the distributor or manufacturing company and they should replace it
