Hello all got a old belgium mauser 98 with a cracked stock. Can't squeeze the crack back together with out screwing up the bedding. What would be a good substance to use to help fill the gaps. Thanks

acragel or a 2 part epoxy, possibly a couple of pins to hold it together.
I am presuming it is split front to back behind the front screw towards the tang? in which case it might be beneficial to start looking for a new stock, depending on how bad the split is of course.

Its cracked where the blind box is thru to where the trigger is.Its ok on the rear of the trigger guard.Just cracked from the trigger foreward.Looks like the stock has been binding on the metal all these years and it finally let go.Trigger guard very hard to remove.

This is very common
if you can gently spread it apart inject some epoxy into the crack with a syringe
if you can't then drill it with a bit just shy the syringe (No Needle) and force the epoxy in until it oozes out the crack

Drilling several tiny holes along the crack and then forcing in the expoxy (like Camk said) works amazingly well. I bet that 98 sporter does not have the mauser cross bolt ahead of the receiver alot of the sporter makers omitted this bolting and the result was a cracked stock. Common in Husky 98 sporters. Do not drill the holes all the way through, makes controlling the flow of the epoxy easier.

cheers Darryl

It usually is a wood check due to the stock drying out... it does not need to be forced together, if you do force it together with epoxy and a clamp holding it; you would be wise to add a screw thread right though that portion. Leave it clamped for 24 hours and file and finish the ends flush with the wood.

Without a doubt IF's G-2 epoxy from Lee Valley. It's an aircraft OKed epoxy. It's good for stuff like golf clubs and skis. But to fill gaps with epoxy you need to add a filler materal,mini-fibers,also available from Lee Valley.Since white looks out of place on a rifle, get some Burnt Umber colouring from Lee valley as well. G-2 and filler makes great bedding compound. I know a guy who uses it for waterproofing wood stocks,as well.

Very Good Advice!:)

I would use Devcon 10110, two part mix, handles like peanut butter so easy to work with, and is very hard.

DoAll in toronto carries it, I am sure there are many others.
