Went goose hunting (opens today here on lands)

Got a pack flying just above my head, maybe 50 feet, we were 2 missed all 6 shots.... omg.

And then we got quite close to some in a field, and they saw us just as we were about to get to shoot.

Decoys didnt work today.

*cry* no goose meal this week.

I don't live on the farm anymore so I have to drive there to hunt.

Next weekend :p

yep, the old bulletproof 10 dollar duck

ever skin a blue bill with a 1/2 fat on the back... so tough that a friggin fillet knive wouldn't cut it ... there is some dammmm tough duck out thar

LOTS AND LOTTSS of lead! Those big targets are moving a helluva lot faster than you think, or they look! First one I ever shot- I pulled on the lead goose and gave him "lots" of lead, pulled the trigger and the third one back dropped....Recovered from the amazement and managed to drop two more!

When I first started goose hunting I had a hell of a time shooting singles or doubles crossing by, birds on approach were never a problem, I just couldn't lead big birds. It wasn't until I had my first full gaggle in V formation to show me how far off I was. I pulled up on the front bird, swung on by giving myself plenty of lead and bang! 4th one back from the front dropped. :) I'm better now, some advice I received early on helped a lot, Butt - Belly - Beak - Bang. say each of those words as you pass them with your bead, pulling the trigger at bang. The speed of your swing must be smooth and steady, it will come.

I aimed for the head, maybe I missed all 3. Though that at 50 feet aiming for the head would hit the body.. eh.

And I had a 10 gauge, 3 1/2 shells. Shame.

Proof positive that it doesn't matter how much lead you throw, if it doesn't get thrown in the right place. And just an observation from someone that has shot a few geese in the past, many people underestimate how far they are, because of the body size.

I have shot maybe 20 in the last years.
Yup, often they are further than you think they are.
Shot more with the 12 gauge than with the 10 gauge.

They make nice spaghetti sauce, half beef half goose.

I usually have a few BBQ breasts then spag the rest ;)

I am against wasting game meat. If you kill, you eat. If you don't like, you don't kill....

Now the big question, where they flying forwards or in reverse? They do that out here I think. ;)

The most frustrating is seeing wing feathers fly and they don't miss a beat!

Remember from my bird hunting days, you'd hear the pellets bounce off. :)

As my grandfather once told me when I expressed frustration at a miss, "If you ain't never missed, you ain't done much shooting."

By the same token, shooting more, doesn't mean that you take more game home.:p

One fellow that I knew had a favorite saying that went along the lines of "as long as there's lead in the air, there's a chance of taking home meat". He never seemed to figure out why nobody wanted to hunt with him.

i shot a 10 Ga for 10 seasons. It 's a good thing you didn't connect at 50 ft. If you had hit the body at that range you'd have had a breast that resembled swiss cheese! At 50 ft(17 yds roughly) a Mod choke with a load of steel shot would have a pattern barely bigger around than a basketball. You are basically firing a missile out there at that distance. Take your gun out and fire it on paper at varying distances with various chokes and loads and get a sense of where each choke is performing best at a given range.

I think you missed his point. I'll explain it for you.

He was trying to show me that everyone misses sometimes. Anyone who says he hasn't missed, or doesn't miss, or thinks a miss shouldn't ever happen, has not done enough shooting to understand that shooting flying birds is difficult. My grandfather was absolutely not the kind to blast away just hoping to hit something, somehow. When I started shooting, shotgun shells were so precious that I got them for Christmas presents. But no one should expect to get a bird on every shot.

I got the point all right, but it can go too far either way. If you never shoot, of course you will never miss, but shooting more, doesn't always mean more meat to take home. I don't expect to take a bird home for every shot, although it has happened on occasion, but some people are happy to take home a bird for every three or four shots, which I don't consider at all acceptable.
