Crap I just missed goose twice today I am quite pissed

i shot a 10 Ga for 10 seasons. It 's a good thing you didn't connect at 50 ft. If you had hit the body at that range you'd have had a breast that resembled swiss cheese! At 50 ft(17 yds roughly) a Mod choke with a load of steel shot would have a pattern barely bigger around than a basketball. You are basically firing a missile out there at that distance. Take your gun out and fire it on paper at varying distances with various chokes and loads and get a sense of where each choke is performing best at a given range.

Orly? So that's why I didnt hit again, just went between them. I always think that firing a shotgun will cover the sky in death pellets and take down anything I aim for...... I suck at bird hunting. Damn

Don't feel too bad. My friend and I missed 2 coyotes 40 yards away, both missing every shot with 12ga. We just looked at each other, jaws touching the ground lol. It happens.

at 15$ a box that's 15 geese for 15$. I don't see the need to reload, so I don't, really.
Would cost me a few hundreds for a press, components, plus the hassle, to save like 10$ a year?
Would get my money back after 20 years or something? uh.

Yet on July 31, you were an expert. Explain.

What is best time of day too hunt geese? I have a few hundred acres of open wheat fields at my disposal, never tried hunting them before.

You learn something from missing. I have learned a whole lot while hunting geese.

Once in awhile I'll get a double or triple and boy does that surprise the heck out of me.

I laid out some decoys and build a blind on Sunday morning and watched some sandhills and a pair of mallards fly by. Never missed a goose all day.

I would try them during the lunch break at 12 or nap at 2pm.

No kidding, any time.

Going back to hunt on saturday, w00t. Goose madness.

Generally birds come off the roost first thing in the morning and head to the fields to feed. Time can vary depending on many factors but generally weather and energy requirements are the main factors. Most times they will head to feed within the first two hours after sunrise and again depending on energy requirements and weather they may spend all day in the field( usually hot dog days of late summer-early fall) are the times that they stay on the fields all day due to their diet. As grain fields become available they will hit those fields and fill up on waste grain then head back to water for the day. They usually prefer water close to grasses and clovers where they can water, rest and graze the day away. They will usually return to the field late afternoon to fill up on grain once again before roosting for the night. Early morning is the easiest and maybe most successful time to hunt them as they come off the roost hungry first thing in the morning and low light conditions help you to hide from prying eyes. Hunting late afternoon geese can be a real concealment challenge as they can see so much better at full light.
Scouting and figuring out their patterns will raise your success exponentially. Finding where they want to feed and what part of the field they prefer to land in can mean the difference between an empty or full ammo box!

Learn to lead them and you'll start catching more and at higher heights. I've noticed that early early morning when it's cooler up here in the north anyway that we hear/see them flying. Goodluck and enjoy the spoils as goose soup is awesome, goose baked like a turkey is awesome ... hell goose period is awesome to eat! HAHA. Cheers,

I'm in a goose blind right now, we just shot at a flock and there were little clouds of feathers hanging in the air but they all stayed up there.
If you ask me the best wingshooting you can do is a high volume dove hunt.
