A P-40 was found in the Egyption desert by a Polish oil excavation team.

From what I read, the pilot got lost and made a forced landing. He survived the crash, and tried to get the radio and batteries working, and failed. He probably got lost in the desert and died of dehydration =\.
 
surprising what randomly pops up in the desert something now if some crate of prestine nazi k98k could apear it would be great to see em on the market lol
 
By the time the bueaucracts & the decision who is going to pay for moving this aircraft, the Arabs will have it picked clean,..look at the people stumbling around and digging and poking at the airframe....and we all know how slow bueaucracy moves...verrry verrry slow..

I believe it is a P 40 KittyHawk,..as it has 3 .50 cal mg in each wing, a Warhawk was armed with 2 .50 mounted under the engine cowling, firing through the prop in syncro, and 2 .303 brownings mounted in both wings,..the 6 .50 cal were a big improvement on armament.
 
The locals are going to pick it clean. Look at the pictures of the canopy and then the last video. All the glass is either broken or has been removed. You can bet your a$$ that those people see it as an opportunity to make a buck as opposed to making a contribution towards preserving history.

The american ones flew with 6 50's from the time they entered the war. The brits called them Tomahawks and found them unsuitable for european combat and shipped them out to the colonies. They may have had the modified armament, i'd have to go back and check, been to long since i looked. It's amazing how many where made considering they're mediocre performance compared to the other aircraft available.

Im not sure what you mean when there were better aircraft avaiable, at the time of Pearl Harbor the P40 was the only fighter being mass produced, the US needed aircraft NOW,..the P 51, P38,P47, Corsair, and Hellcat, were only barely entering production,.some had many mechanical problems to overcome.
 
we've already chewed this over in another thread;as far as the armament goes, you're partially right- there's actually 3 seperate models; the tomahawk , with 2 50s in the nose, 4 30s in the wings, and a 1040 hp allison engine; the kittyhawk with 3 50 s in each wing, and a 1150 hp allison, and the warhawk with 3 50's in each wing and a 1200 hp allison- i got these direct from COMBAT AIRCRAFT OF WW2, published by raf hendon museum, gage publications-
they had to lose the 50's in the nose when they went to the later allisons as there's wasn't room under the cowl for both, and they were problematic

Essentially it. They used some on the Alaska front as well. Gotta remember the Brits were still using biplanes , for carrier based torpedo planes.

There is a book on Stocky's exploits called Kittyhawk pilot that is an excellent read. It describes in very good detail of many of the variants/modifications made of the Kittyhawk. I recall some of them actually having Merlin engines installed but perhaps only as an experimental measure. Stocky lives in my home town and is still a very active fellow. The first time i met him was fishing last fall at a local river. He still has one firm handshake.

yes, that's right- i have documentation of the merlin 61 or 65 slipping right in place of the allison- probably was /could be done in the field if one had the guts to fly it afterward-
