Hey CGN's, just wanted to share a story. We have been hearing coyotes all fall at night but didn't see them much during the day, but lately I have been noticing coyote tracks in our yard in the morning. I saw this female pup mousing around our hay field the afternoon after zeroing my slug gun in that very morning!!! Couldn't believe that I coyote would be out after I made all that racket! I took my mouse squeaker with me when I grabbed my 22-250, squeaked as loud as I could but could not get the coyotes attention. So I took my time and squeezed off the shot at 274yards. After seeing the coyote it sure looks like the same size coyote that's been around our farm yard. Still can't believe that coyote coming out into the open after all the gun shots only a few hours before. Guess it was maybe looking to eat the leftovers of whatever the crazy hunter was shooting at.

they pretty much have no fear of humans anymore I have come within 5 yards of them in some of the small brush lots around here. there was one spotted a few blocks over from me here in downtown Windsor and there's a real problem in lakeshore(mostly new houses that have been developed on farm land by the rich)

I've been hearing yotes howling out back all summer early in the mornings, the wee hrs! Dam things wake me up! I haller out the window, but it does nothing. I have to shoot off the deck into space with my 12 ga to get them to scatter. Perhaps they come for the water, got a trout pond out back. The cat is usually out all night, don't want him to get into trouble out there and my dogs go out for a P as soon as I get up for the day, which is quite early most of the time.

I want to join in on this thread! But it's not about coyotes, just chipmunks if that is okay?

At the range I go to up in the hills, there are some chipmunks who inhabit the area and come out to play during some of my shoots!
One of them came onto the range and crossed from one side to the other at the 25m line, pausing to climb up onto one of the targets
and sat there for a minute while several younger men were blazing away at 50m and 100m targets! I am proud to say that none of
the gunnys, some of whom were teenagers shooting black rifles, took any shots at our little dare-devil!:bigHug:

I once shot three coyotes on one stand... each about five minutes apart... ever since then, I finish a stand even if I shoot one early.

Animals have no idea what a gun is. Sudden noises are just sudden noises, and, if they hear sudden noises fairly often, they begin to ignore them. They do not think things like, "Man, was that a fire cracker or a gun shot?" or "I bet that's a gun shot so there must be a hunter over there shooting high velocity bullets that could tear me apart if one hits me. I better not go there."

They learn that 98% of the time humans are completely harmless, slow, and they leave crap behind that is sometimes good to eat. At least many do. The ones where I live will often start to run if you let up on the gas pedal of the truck. THEY have been shot at by yahoos blasting away from the grid road at 500 yards so often they know exactly what a truck slowing down can mean. They still, however, will follow along within feet of a combine picking up a swath so they can grab all the rodents running for their lives. They are not stupid, but they are not very good at scientific deduction.

Always hang tough after the first coyote in a set, and start calling again immediately. You will get quite a bit of action from doing so. Don't hesitate to call an area that has been driven around by some goof truck hunting if you think they may be in there. They are quite capable of just letting a vehicle go by and then going about their business.

Are you sure its coyotes howling?

I've been told by an experienced old timer that bigfoot will imitate a coyote to bring them within grabbing range for his breakfast!

Time to tread lightly and carry a big gun. :)

Looks,peaceful there now....
With all that green cover I can hardly believe it is December and the coat on that dog is full like it is.
Choice of bullet was?
Exit hole small or large?
Thank You for sharing,
Rob

The bullet I use is the Hornady V max 50 grain, there is a small entry hole and no exit hole, I have shot a fox with that round and it almost tore the Fox in half. The weather here is crazy for the time of year, and it sounds like it is going to stay warm for a while yet. Thanks!

A coyote came by my house mid day when I was eating my lunch. It killed one of my chickens and my guinea hens started attacking it. I ran out to scare it off and it ran away. I had no time to get a gun cause it would have killed everything.

Sorry to hear about your chickens, the coyotes here seem to enjoy teasing the farm dogs, they don't even seem to be afraid of our German Shepherd, we have a young son who likes to play outside so any coyote I see near our buildings has a price on its head

Most coyotes aren't affected by gun shots. I don't know if its because they can't hear it or dont know what it is....But I have shot a coyote and had its buddy run right over to him when he dropped and stood there for me to drop him on top of the other one.

I start coyote hunting this weekend as we have way too many around here. Thats all I get trail camera pictures of, and the pups are out on their own now and come to the call easy :D
