Crazy dream of sks pcc

IIRC sks barrels are pinned and pressed, so replacing a barrel isn't worth the cost.

It would be nice to have a 7.62x25 carbine of some sort, but you'd probably be better off starting with a gun that is more suitable to messing around with.

Anything is possible with enough time and money.

Or for example, a lack of money and time:

Many SKS barrels are threaded in as well

You'd likely end up with something that is barely an SKS. Even if you set up a working gas system that is a very large and heavy bolt to push. Guns like the M1 Carbine can be successfully converted.

An M1 carbine conversion would be neat. Would be an interesting way to turn some of the Restricted M1s into NR if you're replacing the barrel anyways...

But that makes me wonder, Is 7.62x25 even worth the bother these days? It doesn't seem to be all that much cheaper than 9mm these days, and its all surplus corrosive ammo. I feel like the idea of converting something to x25 made a lot more sense 5 years ago when the ammo was much cheaper, now it seems like its a lot of work to get something thats not much cheaper to feed than a 9mm anyways and the surplus ammo is likely to increase in price faster than 9mm, no?

When I got my pal x25 could be had for .10c/EA or less. Now it's pretty well the same price as 9mm and the ammo you get can be pretty terrible. I have had batches that looked fine but we're just a PITA because of all the hangfires and duds. I can't really say this sort of project is worth it from an economical standpoint but that's not a concern for some guys.

I really do like the x25, I wish I had a Carbine chambered for it. With handloads or decent factory ammo I have no doubt it would be a fun and effective small game tool.

It is not just about the price and about ballistic trajectory, which is quite similar, though slightly better with 7.62. It's more about having a smaller calibre round that is more potent and more penetrative. Think as in level 3a vs high speed 7.62x25 from carbine. It's just a beast. Though as I had mentioned before I would go JR carbine conversion way in Canada or AR conversion in USA, definitely not SKS conversion way.

It just sounded fun it me if a barrel could be had affordability. I know a machinist who loves interesting challenges. He is going to make a set of novak sights fit my M57. Just for ####s and giggles.

The barrel is easy and cheap. Target shooters have lots of used 308 barrels they have replaced because they were burned out.

Only the first 6" is worn. the rest is in good shape. Take 19" out of a 28" barrel and you have an almost free high quality barrel to work with. It would need chambering and threading, of course.

The challenge would be to get a magazine to work.

In my conversion I use a 1911 mag in 38 Super. I have to seat the bullets a bit deeper. A M1Carbine mag might be better.

Not all of them.

Oh I get that, the ballistics are quite interesting for the 7.62x25. But then it comes down to what's your goal? Is its just better performance than 9mm, the 7.62x39 already has that in spades. If it's something better suited for small game or armor penetration, I'm sure there are better options for that too. So from my perspective, it's a combination of factors that make the x25 appealing, and one of those is cost. Once the cost of x25 exceeds that of other common rounds (its not there yet but looks like it'll get there soon) then I can't help but think it's appeal starts to drop off.
