crazy idea

McCann Industries used to do 458WM conversion on the M1 Garand not sure if they still do that or not you can probably search on the net for more details.

i was reading something the other day that apparently springfield did a couple of caliber conversions one being 7mm-08 but i cant remember the other caliber , i wouldnt mind seeing a 223 conversion kit

.243 seems to ring a bell

True from what I remember. I think a .35 Whelen would be possible too if someone made a barrel for it and an adjustable gas plug. Any caliber roughly the same diam. case as the 30.06/.308 would be possible for the Garand and still use the same enbloc clips. I would want a 6.5mm Swede as long as we're dreaming.

I'm still looking foward to a .50 Beowulf AR. Would be awesome to see a M1 or M14 in some massive caliber.

The problem is support from barrel makers to make an odd caliber barrel blank(and not just a standard black but of any M1/M14 profile to include splines, etc)

Therefore it is probably much easier to stick with a .30 caliber bullet and have the barrel properly chamber reamed. Indeed there are in fact lots of .308 Garands. For some while one offs, I'd imagine a .300Win Mag is possible on a M1Garand, but I'm not sure how well rimmed cases work on enblocs.

There is already support for gas systems via adjustable valves like the Shuster.

It's all about the pressure curve.
It is feasable to use calibers that can be loaded to mimic the same pressue curve as the .308
Once we have successfully got the .308 short chambered medium barrels i am currently having made... It will be a very good possibility that I may be able to also provide 243 and something in 7mm

If you guys have a caliber in mind, that has been done before, without modding the gas port and distance froom shoulder, I'm prepared to discuss having them made.
The external barrel dimensions are easyily cnc'd with any caliber blank.
Let's open this thread up and discuss this further.
What are the known calibers and what mods if any were required to achieve a functional rifle

I would love to have one in 6.5mm caliber either the 6.5x47 (Lapua) or 6.5x55.

These will work on short action (and mag) without a lot of trouble.

Well, I sugested 358 W because it was based on the 308 case correct? I consider big bore to be over .30 and anything under is sub' caliber, maybe im wrong, maybe everyones opinion is different. Anywho. the 308W does all I need it to do for hunting moose/deer what ever walks and has fur. I have always wanted a big bore semi auto. I would like to consider cost of feeding. If we can make somthing like this happen, might as well try to make it somthing we can afford to feed. I realize its no .223 but it would be nice to keep ammo selected at a "reasonable" price. Some people say 308 isnt cheep, but I dont think its all THAT bad.. Also, availability should be a concern as well. Whats the point of having it if we cant feed it...just some thoughts from a newbi
