Crazy Norinco M14 flash hider

Ok so I've read most of the threads on how to remove it I must have a really crazy one because I have banged at it for hours, tried drilling out the welds and now have resorted to cutting it but still can't get the welds to give. Here are some photos of the damage I have done to it my frustration of trying to remove the flash hider. Any tips as to how to get the rest off would be greatly appreciated.

How good are you with hand tools, like files and a hacksaw?
The welds cover part of the lower circumference of the collar.
I would slit the remains of the collar lengthwise along the spines. When the cuts were almost through, I would use a small cold chisel and break away the parts of the collar not welded to the barrel. I would then carefully file away the welded areas - the file cuts would be flat and tangental to the barrel. Done carefully, the welded areas could be removed without filing into the barrel.
If worse comes to worst, shorty M305s are very popular.

Only I'd use a cutting disc on a die grinder.
 
good for you , tiriaq- when i saw this, i was thinking omg- and DREMEL- that's why i said NOTHING until someone else chimed in
 
Dremels are great little tools, wouldn't be without one - BUT - it is really easy to do more harm that good with one. There is a learning curve involved.
 
i have never used anything but a dremel and a 1/8th round nose reamer bit.
the 2 spot welds are on the underside of the flash hider collar. I generally use lotsa light to find the welds, they appear as a shadowy circle in the parkerized finish. use a good centerpunch and rough punch the centers of the 2 welds. Then take your reamer bit .... WEAR EYE PROTECTION AND GLOVES. the burrs created by this bit are figgen nasty lil buggers...... and start working the welds using the punch marks as a pilot. Work into the welds as well as enlarging the "hole" at the same time. working the hole wider as you go deeper will weaken these welds perfectly. Be careful not to dig through into the barrel itself..... once you think you are getting close, start wacking on the flash hider ..... doesn't move..... grind away a bit more, then repeat the hammering process.
 
Ok with a little more dremeling I was able to weaken it to the point that a good tap was able to free it. It now has a USGI flash hider on it till I can figure out how to re barrel the M14 with my new USGI barrel.

If you're taking it off to shorten the barrel, just cut the whole works off to length. Forget about the FH, it's ####ed already.

If you're going to leave the barrel to length and install a USGI FH, make sure you save the castle nut from the original takedown.
 
he is eventually going to swap it to the very sweet usgi full length barrel and flash hider he was lucky enough to pry outta my mitts hehehehe ;)

isn't it a sweet feeling of victory when that GAWDDAMM norinco flash hider finally breaks loose :D :D :D

Try using some acetone to thoroughly clean the general area where the welds are, let it dry completely and then place a small drop of oil on the area and rub it in, I found that when I did this the area where the welds are located became very clearly delineated and the centers of the welds were then easy to determine...

...follow this up with careful use of a Dremel with a grinding bit and/or cutting wheel.

we REALLY NEED SOMEONE TO make USGI type flashiders w/bayonet lugs THIS SIDE OF THE LINE- personally, i'd love to see one made to accept the M7-M9 series( current) , even if it did add another couple of inches to oal
just a thought - can you imagine an m14 with a provision for the current m9 series bayonet?- talk ablut a GUN/KNIFE COMBINATION

I have a guy working on cnc programs for a few small m14/m1a parts..... nowhere near coming to market though. We did look at flash hiders..... and will be looking at them again..... but we are a long ways off of making that a reality. Getting my stocks to the point where they are at has taken a long road as well...... but all good things come.... :D
