Recently Ive been looking at the prs style matches with a lot of interest. Its been a lot of reading so far and one question I had that more experienced users might be able to better answer is cdn availability of 6.5mm ammunition. While I would like to get into handloading with time, I'm starting without that capacity and I'm curious how easy to find factory match up here?

On all the videos out of the states there is a lot of "its great as factory match is readily avail and even cheaper than .308" but a cursory look through the online sites of some local shops it seems to be few and far between. (or out of stock) with price being the same or slightly more than 308 (match)

I'm new enough to the sport that I'm sure a 308 would do me fine until I get more experience with distance shooting, making ammo more plentiful, but I've got limited room in the safe and figured why not look into the various hurdles to jump straight into a 6.5mm rifle before I settle on 308.

I recognize that hand loading is a big component to this sport, hopefully with time I can get that part of it setup. Until then wanted to see how hard it is to feed if I dont yet reload. any recommendations?

cheers

Every cabelas I've been in has had a couple boxes. My local gun store (which is a guy selling guns out of his basement) carries lots of Creedmoor match ammo. He use to shoot a lot competitively so it doesn't surprise me. I think a box of Hornady 140gr Match ammo was worth about $40 for 20 rounds from him.

Will a lot more around of the 6.5 stuff once the 6 CM is out and becomes the better seller. I know I have shot with a few n the US that ran the prime and that seemed good for sure.

Bullseye carries it for $46/box, not sure if shipping is extra.

That said, shoot 200rnds for a match (180 plus sighters ) and you just ran through $500 worth of factory ammunition ( expect to lose some of that brass!).

I'm reloading for 308 and 260 @ about a buck a round, less if I use range brass or recycled cases as available from private sellers and CGN vendors like Western Metal.

Buy the Lee Aneversary loading set from Cabelas for( $180 plus shipping) order up components from Budger Reloaders Supply ($194 plus shipping) and you have what you need to roll enough for your first match AND still have enough left over to pay your entry fee and buy lunch.

There used to be some pretty darn good reasons not to load your own but that was before federal blue box hit $2/rnd.

Lots of folks here happy to help if you have any "how to" questions!

My 800m 308 load breaks down to less than a buck;

$0.42/projectile ($42/100 for Speer 168 Match), $0.33/charge (approx 162 charges from 1lb of IMR 4895 @ $44/lbs), $0.06/primer ($5.75/100 CCI large rifle) $0.15/case ($15/100 once fired cases) = $0.96/round.

Spend a few weekends picking up rage cases (if you can, nobody cares here but not all ranges are the same) and shave that to $0.81/round.

Buy a bulk projectile like the 155gn CamPro at $0.27/projectile and now you're down to $0.66/round.

Keep an eye out for deals on the EE, go to the local gun shows, look out for group buys.

I do 260 AI for about $1.35/round with Remington cases, 136gn Lapua scenars and H3841sc but I have to buy projectiles by the 1000 and powder by the 8lb keg. I resize and fireform 308 for brass but shiny new Lapua can be used and still come in under $2/round.
