crimped 40 S&W brass

While I was reloading about 350 rounds of 40 the other day, I ran into a piece of brass that did not want to take the primer. Close examination of the primer pocket revealed that it was crimped. I then checked all of the brass and found 8 pieces that were crimped, all of which were Winchester headstamped. I have reloaded many thousands of rounds of once fired military brass, so I'm familiar with crimping and how to deal with it. I have never before run into crimped handgun brass however. Researching this lead me to understand that Winchester has fairly recently subcontracted with S&B to reload its "millimeter" brass and also some 45 and 40 and that all of it is crimped. Has anyone else run into this?

"...never before run into crimped handgun brass..." Only 9mm that was used in cop SMG's. The OPP TRU slobs left it all over a CF range I ran after they had been training.

Was the brass actually crimped or were the primer pockets just tighter? I know that at least some S&B brass (like their 45ACP) has distinctly tighter primer pockets than North American brass.

I have run into quite a few pieces of brass marked WIN NT with crimped primer pockets in 40 S&W,
I just give it a few turns with a 1/2" countersink bit and the primers go in great.

I second the OP, I have run into quite a bit of range pickup brass that is winchester that has crimped primers. A real pain if you don't inspect prior to loading with a progressive as it wrecks the whole cycle. I thought I was clear or crimped brass when I gave up reloading military 223. Darn
