Crimped Primer - Quick Question/Help

Need help identifying a crimp...
All primers popped out with little issue.
Brass looking similar to this has been reloaded with no issues as well.

From the Left:
1. Winchester = no Crimp
2. AE/Federal Blue dot on primer, = crimp?
3. TW? = Crimp
4. Remington = No Crimp
5. Lake City = Crimp

Basically a little ring around the primer pocket is a crimp.
Will setting a primer in a crimped case w/o swaging it cause problems or excessive pressure?

It will most likely destroy the primer, so "yes" to "cause problems".

The Winchester and RP have no crimp. The other 3 appear to have crimp and those brands usually do.

If you can seat the primer fully then it's good to go. The problem is you usually can't seat a new primer in a crimped shell until you swage or ream (chamfer) the primer pocket. RCBS, Dillon and CH4D make swaging tools for primer pockets, or a Lyman reamer will do it too. You can also use a case mouth chamfer/deburr tool to do this, just removing enough of the edge of the pocket/crimp to let a new primer seat with normal force.

you can also use a utility knife. It will work, however the results wont be as even as using the proper tool

I use a Mac Tools carbide cutting bit, super sharp and fast in the electric drill.

Don't even try to seat a primer in a crimped primer pocket because you will either:

- Waste a perfectly good primer
- Kapop
