Just loaded up some 45-70 for the first time. I used the hornandy FTX bullets that require about an extra .050" trimmed off the case. When i tryed to crimp them my press bottomed out on the RCBS die. I am assuming this is because of the shorter case length? If this is the case can i just shorten the length of the die or am i missing something here? this is my first time trying to crimp. I work in a machine shop so shortening the die would not be a problem.

In a pinch, you can run your cartridge into the resizing die (not all the way) to knock the flare out and pinch the case back to normal. It won't provide a roll crimp though. I did this with the short cases and cast bullets before I ended up with a proper die set and regular brass. Are you loading for a Marlin or a single shot?

I picked up a Lee Factory Crimp die for $15 and shortened it
to use with the shorter Hornady brass. Just pop the centre
section out and take off as much as you need.
That way, I still have the seating die to crimp regular length
brass. I have since picked up a second Lee FCD.

Yes you can save the 15 bucks and just shorten your RCBS die with no ill effects. You'll need to use a carbide though as they are case hardened. Have done many for different reasons, no problems. You can still use it for regular length 45-70 or even 45-90 there after, just set your die correctly.
